Summary: Eliezer is looking for a mentor to teach him Kabbalah due to the fact that Eliezer's father thinks he's not old enough to learn Kabbalah yet. While praying at a synagogue, Eliezer meets a man by the name of Moishe the Beadle. Eliezer confides in Moishe his desire to learn about the Kabbalah, and to Eliezer's surprise, Moishe knows all about Kabballah and agrees to teach him about it. Many months later, Moishe the Beatle returns and tells everyone about the horrors he witnessed. According to Moishe the Gestapo forced a group of Jews to dig a grace and shot all of them, forcing them to fall into their own grave. Fortunately Moishe was shot in the leg and was able to escape. Soon after, the Hungarian Police force expel all Jews from Sighet and are forced into cattle cars.

Summary: Elie and the rest of the Jews are packed inside cattle cars. It's impossible to do anything but stand. Some people take turns lying down or sitting. German officers tell the people that if they disobey any orders, they will be shot like dogs. Mrs. Schachter, a woman who had just lost her family, starts having hallucinations. For days, she repeatedly mentions seeing a fire and a furnace. Some people in the cattle car try shutting her up but it's no use, she breaks free and goes on and on about her visions. Eventually, the people get tired of her and start attacking her, enough to actually kill her. Given the current state of these people, it's understandable that they would feel this way; channeling their built up anger and frustration Mrs. Schachter. The train stops and two men comes inside the car with the news that they are now in Auschwitz. All 80 people are brought out of the cars and are faced with the smell of death. Everywhere you look, you see smoke, buildings, and people hysterically crying. All people are stripped of their precious belongings and are brought to the elimination interview. Men go to the left and women go to the right. A man comes up to Elie and his father and asks them their ages. Elie and his father are 15&50. The man tells them to lie and say that they are 18 and 40 so that they will be picked to do labor work. Thanks to that man, Elie and his father are both sent to the left meaning that they get to live. For how long is a mystery. For the next few weeks, Elie and his father adjust to their new lives.

During the examination, the dentist was checking to see if the "patient" had a gold tooth. A few days later, Elizer is called in to have his gold tooth extracted but Eliezer makes up a lie and says that he isn't feeling well. The dentist agrees and reschedules Eliezer's appointment. A few days later, the Dentist's office was removed and the dentist was thrown in jail for selling some of the teeth on the side. One day, Idek gets angry and beats Eliezer.

At the end of the summer in 1944, the Jewish holiday: Rosh Hashanah arrives. Over 10,000 Jews come together to pray and have service. During all of this, Eliezer's religious rebellion only intensifies. Eliezer questions God's decisions, one in particular: why of all people did God choose the Jews? Eliezer doesn't understand why thousands of Jews are praying to God when God himself put the Jews in that unfortunate situation. Eliezer and his father find each other and there is a moment of understanding and bonding between the two. Soon after the holiday, Eliezer gets sent to a different Commando and gets separated from his father. Eliezer worries that his father won't pass the selection process. After a few days Eliezer finds out that he indeed did not make it passed the selection process. A few days later Eliezer finds out that there is a second selection process which his father passes. With the arrival of winter, Eliezer's foot swells up and needs to get it surgically removed. After the surgery, the German Jewish doctor tells Eliezer to let his foot heal for 2 weeks. During this time, Eliezer finds out that there's going to be another selection process for the people in the infirmary. Because of this, Eliezer leaves with his father and evacuates Buna. He later finds out that those who stayed in the infirmary were saved by Russians.

Prisoners of Buna are evacuated due to the blizzard. Prisoners are forced to run and if anybody stops, they are shot dead. Eliezer tries his best to run given the cruel circumstances. After running 42 miles, the prisoners find an abandoned village. Eliezer and his father take turns sleeping because falling asleep in the cold would be deadly. While this is happening, a rabbi goes around asking prisoners if they had seen his son. Eliezer later finds out that the Rabbi's son might have purposely tried to get rid of his father. The prisoners arrive at the Gliewiz camp and are cramped into barracks. During this ordeal, Elie and his father are thrown to the ground and crushed and hear Juliek's violin pierce the silence. He was later found and his violin crushed the next morning. The next morning, another selection process occurs. Elie's father is on the side of death. Elie sneaks his father back to the safe side. The prisoners that made it passed the selection process are thrown into cattle cars. Those who are dead are thrown of the cars. Elie's father is accidently mistaken for being dead. Only 12 out of the 100 prisoners were alive. The journey to buchenwald weakened. Elie's father and he had contracted dysentery. The next morning, Elie finds out that his father was taken to the crematory. During this time, Elie didn't have time to grieve. He could only think of food and his survival. American troops come in and free the prisoners. Elie contracts food poisoning and is sent to the hospital. He takes a look at himself in the mirror for the first time and sees a corpse staring back at him.
