• Disruption: Matta-Clark literally sliced buildings in half, exploring the physical disruption of space. By cutting through abandoned houses, he disrupts the architectural integrity, turning familiar structures into fragmented forms that challenge our perception of space.

  • Shows the absence of clothes, potentially a metaphor for emptiness.

Fragmentation - Disruption of Wholeness: When something is fragmented, it breaks into parts, disrupting the integrity and unity of the original object.

My work is called “A Cartographer’s Puzzle of a Life”. A series of semi-translucent coloured films

traced with different variations and depictions of a map are stored inside a box. This piece comes to

life through the interaction of the viewer, becoming an intimate exploration of the layered stories

and treasures.

Viewers are invited to rearrange and layer the maps differently above a light source (lightbox). As

the films vary in colour, layering a few maps together creates an entirely different colour, and this

colour can constantly change when you add or take away more layers. Whether you want to layer

everything all at once, or only layer 2 is entirely up to the viewer.

In doing this, this uncovering and discovering becomes a metaphor for life and shows the

importance of how much our space and environment create our life (habits and memories) that go

unnoticed. The participation of the viewer allows them to navigate the environment of the map on

their own, finding small treasures and hidden stories along the way.

The light and dark theme is incorporated not only as a hidden versus seen concept but also

physically in the way the artwork is installed. Without light, viewers would not be able to see the

maps or layers properly and thus the message of the artwork will not be conveyed effectively.

This artwork also emphasises the idea that the path of discoveries in life is not always

straightforward or static, and it’s a dynamic process shaped by perspective, interpretation, and

exploration.

My work is called “Hexed Echoes”. I approached the thematic idea of disruption through the ironic

idea that not disrupting anything causes disruption; in other words, absence. Absence in terms of

inaction, absence of words, gestures, and effort, slowly erodes and stacks damages that eventually

break a relationship. This sculpture reflects the idea of how the various things unsaid or undone

hold just as much weight and power.

The hexagon shape is a common pattern found in nature – symmetrical and balanced, we see the

centre plate first, being whole and clean. The other 6 sections with plates look like normal reflections of the centrepiece from afar until you take a closer look and they are all cracked and

chipped and some ways, breaking the illusion and unity.

The damage on each plate is subtle yet varied, demonstrating the small yet quite significant

damages caused over time. This work examines how emptiness and indifference can lead to cracks

only noticeable until examined close up. Relationships and even mental health may seem whole

and unaffected from afar, but the small hits can mount over time to produce a noticeable yet

undetectable mark.

pottery. It uses gold pigment and lacquer to glue the pieces back together, highlighting the

imperfections and creating a new look for something that was once broken. This process is based

on the philosophies of wabi-sabi which state the beauties in

flaws and values simplicity. It also links to ‘mushin (no

mind)’ which is about detachment and the acceptance of

change and fate in life.

Kintsugi started with Ashikaga Yoshimasa, who sent his tea

bowl for repair to China, and to his distaste came back with

metal staples. He changed them to kintsugi gold seams and

from then on this form of art has been popular.

have a massive impact on the work itself and its

presentation and effectiveness in communicating the

meaning. ‘The Weather Project’ freezes time, preserving

the sunset in space and time and allowing it to be

enjoyed whenever. This could lead to discussions of

whether artificial nature can fully replicate real nature and if it can be seen as the same thing. If

sunsets were to disappear (if climate change makes the clouds heavy or the sky too dark), could we

be satisfied with an artificial sunset if it were able to duplicate the warm atmosphere of a real one?

This creates a connection to our talk about AI in our week 2 class.
