-Immigrant society, people will need to travel back home for the holidays and their families may visit them in NZ

-Due to the large amount of immigrants, foreign Airlines are attracted towards flying into New Zealand.

-South Island has extremely mountainous terrain due to the southern Alps, leading to there being limitations on where and how big an Airport in the area can be, most people choose to reside in the North Island. 

-Auckland is where most people choose to live or migrate to, leading to most flight going to/from the City. Christchurch(NZCH/CHC) is the only major international airport in the Southern Island.

-Air New Zealand and Jet Star are the 2 major airlines to operate in New Zealand domestically, they are based in Auckland. 

-More of a hub and spoke model for international flights as Auckland(NZAA//AKL) is the primary gateway for New Zealand.

-Far away from destinations such as Europe, North America and Asia. Leading to Air New Zealand having a limited global reach.

-No direct flights to Europe.

-Air New Zealand had to stop its service to London via Los Angeles in October 2020 due to competition in the Trans-Atlantic sector and other carriers such as Singapore Airlines and Emirates offering better connections. 

-New Zealand needs to import large amount of items due to a small domestic manufacturing market and exports large amounts of dairy products due to agriculture. This leads to a demand in the cargo sector especially for dairy products as they need to be transported ASAP.

Chief executive Malcolm Johns says this will see Memorial Ave extended to create a “grand avenue” to an expanded terminal (pictured above). Extensions will also be made to both runways to cater for larger and more frequent aircraft, without a need for major changes to the airfield or noise impacts in residential areas. 

“The airport is the South Island’s gateway for visitors, airfreight and business and by 2040 is projected to have 20,000 people working here,” he says. “Christchurch Airport is a leader in future thinking, as demonstrated through our partnership in the country’s first autonomous vehicle trial [pictured below] and the world-first partnership with Alibaba.” The airport generates $2.1 billion in regional GDP and that creates more than 60,000 jobs, he adds.
