Pupils will learn about Charles Darwin and his voyage to the Galápagos Islands before producing a journalistic report on his discoveries. Alongside developing core writing skills, we will introduce and practise the following key concepts:

  • Using passive verbs

  • Using a range of verb forms accurately and consistently, including the progressive and present perfect forms

  • Using a wide range of cohesive devices to link ideas

  • Using organisational and presentational devices to structure text clearly

  • Using colons to mark boundaries between independent clauses

In addition to this, we'll be reading a selection of narrative poems linked to the sea and looking at the way in which poets use figurative language and personification to bring their poems to life. Following this, we'll be writing our own narrative poems around the theme of an ocean voyage.
