<title>A Short History of DNA1857 : Gregor Mendel performed his famous experiments into inheritance. 1869 : Friedrich Miescher isolated a new substance inside the nuclei of human white blood cells; he called it nuclein and thought it functioned as a storehouse of phosphorus. He found nuclein in every cell type he tested.1889 : Richard Altmann named the new substance nucleic acid; it was found only in the chromosomes.1928 : Frederick Griffith formed the thesis that DNA was the molecule of inheritance; about ten years later Oswald Avery confirmed this hypothesis.1929 : Phoebus Levene identified the components of DNA and showed in which order they were linked. He thought that the DNA chain was short and the basis repeated in the same order.1940s : Erwin Chargaff found that the amount of adenine was almost equal to the amount of thymine, and that the amount of guanine was almost equal to that of cytosine (Chargaff’s Rule). Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins obtained an x-ray pattern of DNA (helix shape).1953: James Watson and Francis Crick made the double helix model of DNA (thanks to Franklin and Wilkin&#39;s picture of the X-ray).1984: Alec Jeffreys developed DNA profiling. 1988: DNA profiling was first used in the Enderby murders case in Leicestershire (England).</title>
