Between the year 1880-1929, The Unites States was a world power. The United States had acquired Alaska from Russia for 20 million. Then the U.S took over Hawaii, Guam, and the midway Islands. Then then U.S.A went to war with Spain has the S.S Main was mysteriously blown up during the second Cuban revolution. With that, the U.S declared war against the Spanish were the United States took the Philippians, and multiple Caribbean islands such as Puerto Rico and Cuba from Spain. At this point in time the United States was a world power as the U.S had a very strong economy and strong military and navy to back it up. However a lot of foreign countries under U.S control wanted independence like the Philippines and Cuba. However since the U.S was heavily invested in those country's. They would not relinquish there power over those territories till decadents later. However some Islands like Puerto Rico remain under U.S control but still debating today weather to be a state or have it's own self government. Despite relinquishing it power over other countries, the U.S was still a power house even up to today.

(DA-21 corneal notes) Ch18 textbook " America claims an Empire ".

But now the question is, To what degree did the American society and government live up to its own ideals of liberty and equality between 1880 and 1920 ? To answer that question, the simple answer is no. The reason being is because for one, the United States was constantly oppressing countries like Cuba and the Philippians as the United States denied them the right to self govern. Also when the U.S was in occupation of the Philippians, many philpenos were killed because of lack of food and water. Over 200,000 were killed. Causing the philipenos to rebel and put America into a bloody civil war with Emilio Aguinaldo and his followers. With that, over 24,000 more lives were killed. Another example was in Cuba when the Untied States did not grant Cuba the opportunity to self govern. Instead of granting Cuba its right as a foreign country to self govern. The U.S forced the Cubans to ratify a constitution were the U.S got involved in Cuba's political affairs. To top it all off the U.S did not grant the citizens of these countries under U.S rule a fair citizenship. To conclude the U.S The U.S did not live up to its own ideals as the government went against the constitution as they did not give fair citizenship to all its people and the right for a country to have its own right to self govern.

(DA-21 corneal notes) Ch 18 textbook questions " America claims an Empire ".

"American imperialism" is a term that refers to the economic, military, and cultural influence of the United States on other countries. First popularized during the presidency of James K. Polk, the concept of an "American Empire" was made a reality throughout the latter half of the 1800s. During this time, industrialization caused American businessmen to seek new international markets in which to sell their goods. In addition, the increasing influence of social Darwinism led to the belief that the United States was inherently responsible for bringing concepts such as industry, democracy, and Christianity to less developed "savage" societies. The combination of these attitudes and other factors led the United States toward imperialism.

Source: Boundless. “American Imperialism.” Boundless U.S. History Boundless, 20 Nov. 2016.
