We should know what we need to do to measure matter. We should also know that there can be different properties of matter. We should know that not everything is made up of matter like words, thoughts, dreams, etc. Even when you freeze a glass of water and it appears bigger it still has the same amount of water, you are adding nothing to it. Matter is made up of many particles. Even air is considered matter, air can fill up a balloon. Matter can be a gas, solid, and/or liquid. Matter can be anything that has a mass and takes up space. Matter can be made of four elements, air, earth, fire, and water. In the late 1600's experiments by early chemists began to show that matter was made up of many more than just four elements. Scientists know that all matter in the universe is made up of more than 100 different substances, called elements. An element is a substance that can not be broken down into any other substance by chemical or physical means. Elements are represented by one- or two-letter symbols, such as C for carbon, O for oxygen, and Ca for calcium. In chemistry a substance is a single kind of matter that is pure meaning it always has a specific makeup or composition.
