Realism. What is it? When was it?

Realism is a style in art, music, and literature that depicts the lives and everyday activities of ordinary people. It attempts to illustrate life without romantic subjectivity and idealization. Realism focuses on the actualities of life, and truthfully treats the commonplace characters of everyday life. The purpose of using realism is to emphasize the reality and morality that is usually relativistic and intrinsic for the people as well as the society. This sort of realism makes the readers face reality as it happens in the world, rather than in the make-believe world of fantasy. In literature, authors use realism as a literary technique to describe story elements, such as, setting, characters, themes, and etc. Through realism, writers explain things without decorative language or sugar-coating the events. Realism is a movement of art, which began in the late 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century in France and later spread to the entire world.

What did Realism emerge from?

Realism emerged from Romanticism. As the 19th century went on, industrialization and urbanization led to major social and economic changes. The rich and poor became divided. Not to mention, there was a new need for literature that reflected people's real life. Realism revolted against the exotic subject matter and the exaggerated emotionalism and drama of the Romantic movement. People felt that they were controlled by heredity and the environment. The behaviors were beyond our control. Finally, humanity is a natural object, rather than being above all else.

Huckleberry Finn Summary

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is based upon a subversive confrontation of slavery and racism. This story involves a boy and a runaway slave which are later on found floating in the Mississippi River. Huckleberry is a boy around the age of 13 to 14 and is the son of a drunk man. He never had a mother by his side since he was born. Although, he has been through a lot he is an adventurous person who likes nature. Huckleberry was then adopted by Miss Watson who owned many slaves but cared about their education and helped them financially. One day his dad kidnaps Huckleberry for the money so he can go get drunk but he mistreats Huckleberry very often. Until, Huckleberry put a stop to it and faked his own death and escape from the hands of his father. Twain attacked myriad of the traditions the South held at the time of its publication. On the other hand, one of the main characters Huckleberry Finn sees and judges the South. Jim is the runaway slave, who provides friendship and protection. Both Huckleberry and Jim are by each other's side along the Mississippi raft. In the end, Aunt Sally wants to adopt Huck but he has had enough and decides to travel to the West.

Huckleberry Finn Themes

The first theme is the conflict between civilization and "natural life". Huck represents natural life through his freedom of spirit, uncivilized ways, and desire to escape from civilization. The theme of honor is introduced where Tom Sawyer expresses his belief that there is a great deal of honor associated with thieving. Food plays a role in the novel. In Huck's childhood, he would fight pigs for food symbolizing people protecting and caring for him. A theme Twain focuses on quite heavily on in the novel is the mockery of religion. Huck Finn's sarcasm perfectly situated him to deride religion, representing Twain's personal views. Superstition appears throughout the novel. Both Huck and Jim are very rational characters, yet when they encounter anything slightly superstitious, irrationality takes over. The power superstition holds over the two demonstrates Huck and Jim are child-like despite their apparent maturity. The theme of slavery is perhaps the most well known aspect of this novel. Jim is used to demonstrate the humanity of slaves and the complication of emotions and struggles with the path of his life. In the end, Huck chooses to free Jim, based on his personal experiences rather than social norms, thus chooses the morality of the "natural life" over that of civilization.

Huckleberry Finn literary devices: Narrator point of view, tone, author's purpose, dialect and symbolism

The narrator has written this story in the first-person's point of view because it allows the readers/audience to experience the story through Huck's eyes and identifies closely with the narrator. The story is told entirely from Huckleberry's perspective, in where he refers himself as "I" throughout the novel. A point of view is the narrator's position in relation to a story being told. The author's could use first, second, third -point of view. There are two level tones through the novel. There is the casual and youthful style of Huckleberry's narration. On the other hand, you have the dark and moralistic tone of the novel. The tone of Huckleberry Finn is so moralistic it is clearly expressed when talking about slavery. Tone is the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, and etc. The tones can be formal, sad, comic, sarcastic, and etc. The author's purpose is to talk about the lack of freedom some people have in a country. The author's purpose is the reason an author decides to write about a specific topic. For example, the purpose of The Crucible is to inform the audience about having integrity. It is very dialectal as to how Jim, the slave, experiences the most throughout the novel because his dialogue is full of improper words or always says "yes" to things. Dialect is a particular form of a language which is peculiar to a specific region or social group. For example, Twain exaggerates the characters to distinguish them from one another. The Mississippi River symbolizes freedom for society and civilization for Huck, and freedom from slavery for Jim. Finally, when both are floating on their raft down the river, it represents how they truly feel happy and free. Symbolism is the symbolic meaning attributed to natural objects or facts. For example, the color white usually stands for life and purity.
