Locke points out in this chapter that men will give up their own rights to protect their property. He believes that when men do this they are automatically giving up equality, liberty, and executive power. In the original version of this chapter Locke italicizes the words, "peace, safety, and public good of the people". He purposefully does this in several places throughout the book to express the importance of certain words. He italicizes these words to point the importance of these fundamentals, and how typically a monarchy ignores these basic principles.

John Locke's philosophy is easy to follow and understand because it makes sense. Our government is heavily influenced by his ideas which we can see on a day to day basis. Locke was aware of the selfish drive that every human has and its tendency to destroy said human. Locke wanted to show why a government that was well made and controlled was necessary for the survival and prosperity of a country. He knew that people would be willing to make sacrifices for a secured life that was prosperous and meaningful.

Rousseau's social contract explains how people must alter their behavior and lessen their power in order to have a well-functioning society. He discusses how we do not "engender new forces, but unite and direct" them in order to have a successfully governing body. His goal was to create a government in which the population can be guided in the right direction while simultaneously allowing each individual to maintain their own rights and power. In his social contract, Rousseau explains how the citizens relinquish a certain right of entire freedom for the greater good in which a "moral and collective body" acts on behalf of the people. -Alex Lawson
