There are several concepts from Hoy and Miskel chapter 2, in which will help inform educators to address inequality in teaching and learning. One concept that can cause inequality in education, under the behavioral theory, would be direct instruction. Not all students learn the same, and teachers much differentiate teaching styles to meet the needs of all of the students in their classroom. When it comes to cognitive learning, I love the example used on page 51, referencing the difference in the outcome between the learners who had prior knowledge of baseball versus those who did not. It also states that it is important to find what each individual brings to the learning situation. By knowing your students’ prior knowledge, you can play to their strengths to best differentiated instruction possible to help them achieve the overall goal. As for constructivism, I would like to focus on radical constructivism when it comes to inequality in teaching and learning. This theory states that some people have more power than others do when defining what constitutes knowledge. Another key point is that all beliefs are not equal which also leads to inequalities in both teachings and learning.

In the video, Improving Instruction, there were evident leadership skills being demonstrated in the work of Deirdre Keye and Niki Brown. The first skill that stood out to me was collaboration. Collaboration between educators and administration, a collaboration between grade level teachers, and collaboration between grade level leaders. Niki Brown stated that she very quickly learned that as a leader, you cannot take on everything yourself. Instead, you need to bring out the leaders in your teachers and that is where you will find success. Implementing grade-level leaders, not only gave these leaders a voice but also gave them opportunities to openly collaborate with other grade-level teachers. When I first became a team leader last year, I also tried to take on all of the work at once. This is an area of growth for myself that I am still working on as a leader. I believe that if I continue to pull to the strengths of my team members, that ultimately we will find success through collaboration.

How would you support teachers in international settings in becoming culturally responsive and addressing systemic racism?

Coming from an international setting currently, I believe that teachers need a lot of background/ prior knowledge about the culture before entering a new international teaching setting. Being culturally aware is key in these learning environments. As a leader, I would make sure to provide resources and professional development to all new teachers first and foremost. It is important that throughout the year you continue to build on this knowledge and for teachers to learn from each other by sharing personal experiences with being culturally responsive in their classrooms. There needs to be an ongoing effort to make sure that curriculum, literature, and classroom environments are inclusive and culturally appropriate.
