Keeping Payment Information Secure Online

For more than 10 years, Allied Wallet has provided e-commerce solutions for a wide variety of online merchants. Allied Wallet is committed to helping clients keep their customers' information safe and secure.

When you pay online, you trust that the merchant has taken steps to keep your information secure. However, that merchant can only safeguard the information as the site has received it. You also have a role to play in ensuring that your information stays out of the hands of potential identity thieves.

First, you must take care that the site or customer representative is genuine. Fraud perpetrators often create a site to masquerade as an e-commerce company, though they do not always do so skillfully. If a site looks odd, or if a representative contacts you directly, claiming to be from a particular company, you can begin to verify authenticity by navigating directly to the company site and cross-checking appearances or credentials.

When you do make a payment, you can protect yourself by ensuring that you are doing so in private and that no one can watch you make a payment or enter a password in person. Passwords should be unique enough that someone who is not there with you cannot easily guess it, and it should be written down in code or otherwise guarded if you need to record it.

Online shoppers should be particularly mindful of their Social Security numbers and should be wary of any site that asks for them, as these may be masquerades or otherwise fraudulent sites. If you have this information recorded anywhere on your computer, you should take care to delete or move that document if your computer passes out of your hands, and you must never give it directly to any organizational representative whose identity you have not verified. This is a crucial step in ensuring that your most sensitive information stays as safe as possible.

PCI Compliance and What It Means for Your Business

Allied Wallet is an Internet payment service provider built on a foundation of safety and security. Allied Wallet’s payment processing system protects customers’ financial information by adhering to multiple top compliances and certifications, including PCI DSS Level 1 compliance.

PCI DSS is short for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards. PCI compliance is divided into four levels, with Level 1 being the highest. The standard was created in a joint effort from major credit card companies like Visa, Discover, JCB, American Express, and MasterCard to help protect both consumers and merchants. To reach PCI DSS Level 1 compliance, a merchant must process over 6 million Visa transactions annually.

If a customer buys something from your website and has her financial data stolen, it may lead to serious fines if your business is not PCI compliant. For each incident, a business can be charged up to $500,000 for not complying with PCI standards. Additionally, merchants may lose the ability to accept payments from the credit cards mentioned above, which could potentially cripple a business.

Using a PCI-compliant shopping gateway like Allied Wallet takes that responsibility off of your business, as the payment gateway provider becomes responsible for maintaining PCI compliance. Since the provider handles and processes all payments, you never handle a customer’s credit card information directly despite still making the sale.
