-The Roman Empier's frontiers stretched for more than 5,000 km and across 3 continents.
-The Antonine Wall is just one small part of it.
-Sections of this vast system of frontiers can still be seen across Europe, for example: Austria, Belguim, the Netherlands, Serbia and the UK.
-Also in the Middle East and north Africa.
-Each of these military frontiers had the same job: to define the limits of the Roman Empire. But they were not all alike.
-Different structures were adopted in different areas. In some places artificial boundaries were built (walls). In other places the Romans made use of natural boundaries (seas or rivers).

(This is a map which shows the frontiers of the Roman Empire)

-The Romans buried many of the possesions, so that they could not be used by native peoples.
-This has led to the prreservation and survival of some incredible organic remains along the Antonine Wall.
-For example: Distance slabs, Hutcheson Hill (Hunterian Museum)
19 inscribed stone tablets, originally fixed to the Wall.
- As each section of the Wall was completed, the building team celebrated their achievement by creating a stone carved which honoured the Emperor, recorded the distance covered in paces or feet, and featured the name of their legion.

(This is one of the isncribed stone, explained above
