The chapter starts with Oskar talking about he makes jewelry for his mother out of beads based on the voicemails his dad left them the day he died, translated into Morse code. He then goes on to tell the audience how things have changed since his father's death and some of the trauma it has caused him. Such as the inability to take showers or go into his dad's closet, he is also now afraid of things like elevators, suspension bridges, germs, airplanes, fireworks, and "Arab people". Until one day he finally decides to go into his father's closet to look around (SAM).
Oskar then goes to his dads closet and finds a vase on the top shelf of his closet, attempts to climb to get it and then falls with the vase in his hands. He found an envelope within the mess of the vase and inside there was a key. He goes out to find what the key goes to and ends up going to a locksmith and still can't figure it out. He also finds that the envelope that contained the key has "Black" written on the back. He goes to figure out more about the writing and realizes it could be someones name.(Evan)

This Chapter is set in 1963, so Oskar must no longer be the narrator. It is written as a letter, narrated by Oskars grandpa "Brian". The letter tells us about Oskars grandpa and how he lost his ability to speak. He loses words one by one starting with the word Anna "Nick". The last word he was able to speak was "I" "Brian". Chapter two, overall, tells us about Oskars Grandpa. He loses words and eventually finds a girl at a coffee shop and she wants him to marry her "Nick".

Oskar's father designed a puzzle game for him that are sometimes simple and other times very complicated. Oskar always knows how to follow the clues given to him to solve the puzzle.
on page 35, "As for the bracelet mom wore to the funeral, what i did was i converted dad's last voice message into Morse code." Oskar is very creative and smart he conveys this by making Morse code jewelry from his father's voice messages and gives them to his mother as gifts.
(Alexys Rugani)

"I go through his jacket and clothes, his casket is closed but his closet is opened" pg. 37. this allows us to understand if we lose a family member, we would go back and look at their stuff to just think of them

(Jake Blunkosky) The narrator of Chapter 1 is Oscar. The chapter is written in first person point of view. There are many benefits of first person point of few.(Daniel D) the author used first person as a tool. He used it to show how the events that recently occurred effected him and how he views his relationships because of it. we as the reader see hes seeing life more negatively. for example we are told his mother probably wish it was him who died but if we saw if from the mothers point of view also wed learn that isn't the case.
