''R&D Week features a range of events and activities, from Talks to Industry Presentations to Practical Experimentation, through which to consider your research position as an individual and creative. You get to choose from the developing list of things to attend and do on the R&D WEEK. This unit gives you a hands-on taster experience and introduction to what your final year will be like in terms of your Dissertation, FMP / Portfolio project, and Career Development.''
________________________________________________________________
During the week, I have decided to attend 3 site visits of my own choosing. I was originally planning to attend in-person workshops, but due to not being able to get a space in the ones I wanted, I decided to go with site visits. The three things I’ve decided to do during the R&D week are as followed:

1. National Maritime Museum (Cutty sark, Greenwich)

2. Queens house (Cutty Sark, Greenwich)

3. Cinema visit (Spiderman: No way home)

I plan to visit the National Maritime Museum and the Queens house on the same day due to both being the same general area (Greenwich), and not too far from me. I will also be visiting a cinema to watch a film on another day.

Things I looked at included boats, sculptures, paintings and historical artefacts. I also watched a few videos that they had playing in some of the exhibits.

I personally enjoyed all the different boat models as I got to see a wide range of shapes and sizes of boat designs. It got me thinking about what purpose each boat could have and why they were designed that way. Additionally, I specifically enjoyed the glass windows and the colours and imagery present on each one.

During my visit, I watched the above video linked about canoe carving in the Southern Lau Way, and how this industry is closely linked to their everyday life and cultures. For example, their main form of transport is by canoe, due to the fact that there are two islands, and they require travelling to the other island for farming and their daily life.

The craftmanship of the islanders got me thinking about how different things are made, and how the rise of digital mediums may have an impact on how things are made. In the video, the man mentions that they are trying to revive the culture as it is almost dying out. You could link this to a range of different things but can the rise and automation of the modern age be a cause of this, or is there a bigger issue.

With an increase of demand, more automated process may need to be adopted to help reach this demand. However, I wanted to look into how digital mediums, mainly 3D can be used to help with the product manufacturing and the planning that goes behind everything. 3D modelling is something I have learned the basis on in my main animation unit, and I am interested in how it is used in different industries.

(Site visit 1) Why is 3D Modeling Important for Product Manufacturing Companies?

Through my independent research, I found out one way in which 3d modelling is used in the industry; product design. the article lists how 3D is extremely important and useful in product design. There are a range of reasons why this is, such as:

1) Allows for the creation of high-quality prototypes.

2) Obtain physical prototypes quicker with 3D printing. A 3d model can quickly be converted into a print-ready file. This is great as it allows the manufactures to quickly inspect and evaluate the product physically in a fast and efficient manner.

3) Can easily view a model/products property and design in different angles. Manufactures can easily view details in different angles. Manufacturers may create 360-degree views of final products so that customers can obtain a full understanding of all they have to offer. Packaging, colour tones, and dimensions are all easier to examine from a 360-degree view.

4) Design process is streamlined. Collaboration and communication are much more efficient and easier.

5) Input from non-engineering personnel (product marketers etc) may be needed in regard to products concepts and features. A 3D model may allow for a much easier time visualizing and adding their critiques to designs, compared to traditional 2D drawings, which can be difficult for non-technical personnel to properly visualize the end product drafted on paper.

6) Material rendering can be applied to 3d models to create more accurate ideas of how the end product will turn out. It makes Can make it easier for sales and marketing personnel to give input during the design process and designers can continuously change the texture and colour of the model until all team members are satisfied.

7) Accurately depicts an object’s real-life proportions.

The video linked above shows how you can model a small interior scene using a 3D program called '3ds max'. This is just one example of a workflow and how interior design can utilise 3D programs to aid in their work.

From my research, 3D is a really powerful tool for interior designers as well as similar industries such as building design. One example of a positive is that it allows the designers to effectively communicate designs to their clients with 3D visualization.

This is similar to my research into 3d in product design during my independent research for site 1. 2D has its usages and is still important and common in different industries, there's only so much you can do with flat 2d traditional mediums.

3d is particularly great as it allows you to look at a design from all angles and even allows you to zoom in and scale. I won't go too far into the positives of 3D as I already wrote about it during the site visit 1 stuff, but my research into the industry has shown a rise in the utilisation of 3D.

The video above goes into detail about the difference between CGI and VFX.

CGI (stands for Computer generated imagery), are images created using computer graphics. VFX (Visual effects) are a way of mixing real film shooting with false or animated images. To sum up the difference, Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is a style of animation or illustration that relies on computer programs to create characters and motion. Visual effects (VFX) focuses on adding effects to existing imagery or film.

Visual Effects are created by manipulating computer-generated images and shots for the film and animation process. VFX may be used as the effects needed would be impossible to produce physically. They can be created using animation and compositing software.

I adore this video as it is the best demonstration of digital compositing and VFX I've seen.

Compositing is the process of combining multiple images or videos to form a single, cohesive image or video, common in photography and film. Even non- effect films will utilise and have some sort of visual effect used in the production pipeline; digital compositing plays a key role in all visual effects.

Here's something related to the film itself. The video linked above shows some shots from the film, without the editing or Visual effects. Most marvel films, or just films in general, employ lots of visual effects. These kinds of videos show how much work goes into the film in the visual effect department and seeing the film laid bare like this helps to put into perspective how much work goes into it and how talented the people working behind the scenes are.

During the week, I took the time to watch a few animated films, as part of my independent research for R&D week. One of the films I watched was Disney's Encanto (2021).

Similarly to Spiderman, I had already watched the film before, but I wanted to rewatch it to analyse the animation as a whole, something I couldn't do during my initial first viewing, when I just wanted to enjoy the film the first time round . The point of this is to watch how animation for films/movies look like, as well as look into the process via a bunch of online videos I found that were uploaded by animators on the film.

(4) Shot breakdowns and the importance of reference videos.

I looked into a range of process shots and behind-the-scene videos of Encanto. Even before I watched the film itself, I saw a bunch of these while scrolling through social media. The above video shows the shot progression of a specific shot in the song 'we don't talk about bruno'. When watching this specific part in the film (as well as rewatching and playing this specific song), this shot in particular was interesting and looked quite complex due to the amount of movements and characters moving at once. During this elective week, I am working on my own performance animation for my main unit, so the amount of moving pieces in this specific shot looks overwhelming as whole.

The above video shows the shot progression as well as the reference video used as a base and reference for the animation, something that I've been using for my own animations for my main university work.

Video references are an extremely important part of the animation reference as it acts as a guide to how an animation moves and helps to create a certain feel/movement. It helps with creating realistic or appealing animation as it helps you understand how a character would move or act within certain actions of movement, helping to understand the weight and body movements. Video references are the same as reference photos in art. It helps you get a grasp of how a movement would play out without making assumptions based off your imagination or base knowledge/understanding.

Having a piece of reference footage to examine and analyse allows the animator to see and understand where the weight is being placed or shifts to is invaluable. As well as little details that ground your work and make it feel real and tangible. Outside of specific poses it can also help a great deal with timing.

For my own animations, reference videos, whether they are primary (filmed myself) or secondary (from elsewhere), are extremely important. I can try to imagine how something moves, but without a reference video, I usually have issues understanding the mechanics of a movement, as well as the technical side of things, such as the principles of animation, timing and arcs. References are a godsend in my work and animation as a whole, so it is important to learn to film them and utilise them.

Similar to the first video I linked, this one also has lots of moving pieces. What's interesting is that in the earliest stages of the process, blocks were used as a stand in for the characters, which is a really cool tid-bit. You can see more examples of animation references as well, but this time done by the animators, and not professional actors.

Through my research, I found that the method of using blocks as a stand in for the actual rigs/characters is similar to a proxy rig.

Animators want rigs to be as close to real time playback as possible, and that there are times where a specific character rig makes this very challenging from the rigging side. A proxy rig helps to remove certain calculations that should be able to speed up your playback speed and your overall workflow.

Rewatching this film has given me more of an understanding about how reference videos are extremely important for the animation process. I already knew this before hand through my own usage, however it has shown me that you don't have to stick to professional references, or references recorded by actual actors with experience.

references done by people with experience, who can properly articulate emotions and what's happening would be much better, but the references shown in the video were recorded by the animators themselves from their own home (with the exception of 'we don't talk about Bruno'). The film was animated during the pandemic in the animators homes, so finding the time and putting up proper safety precautions would've been hard. But this shows that anyone can record their own references, it just takes practise.

It makes me want to learn and become more confident about acting in the future, as it would do great for my future animations. I have already taken 2 acting classes for my main unit, but i'm still vey unconfident and a beginner relating to acting.
