One man finished paying his student loan 10 years after he started. He intended on paying everything right after he was done school but he says that expenses of living independently and paying bills delayed paying off his loan. He reflects on his experience and states that he wishes he had started working while in school to help pay off this loan. I found this useful and reassuring because I decided to start working half way through my schooling to help with expenses and I’m happy I did and did not wait until after I’m done school. A poll done on student loan concluded that about ¼ of the Canadian graduates who participated in the poll, wished they had avoided other debt by staying away from credit cards and car loans.

This page on the Government of Canada's website, gives some tips on managing student loan debt. It counsels people to use extra money that they may have towards paying off student debt. It also encourages students to try to pay the loan off while in school or within the 6 months after completing school where interest is not applied. This is useful to keep in mind because if this is put as a priority over other not so urgent expenses, it will help reduce the amount that needs to be paid back. Paying more each month is also another advice given.

This website talks about the consequences of a big student loan when it comes to mental health. The reports show that there is a higher chance of developing a mental illness in early adulthood when the person has a high loan to pay. With this being a serious problem, York university educators have been trained to identify students in distress and guide them in the right direction. A wellness strategy was being discussed to help student cope. This is useful information because it shows that this problem is not being hidden but it is being brought forward to aid students and hopefully it has great results.

In this video, it gets into detail about the current situation of a University of Ottawa law student and her dream crushing experience with debt. She is $150,000.00 in debt from post secondary education. She had the support from student lines of credit but now she feels limited with this huge debt on her shoulder while being so close to graduation. This debt is limiting her on dreaming big and wanting to pursue bigger things such as owning her own law office. I learned that debt can accumulate really fast just as this student mentioned, her credit loan reached the maximum very shortly and when she reached out to another institution for a larger loan, that too reached its max really quick.

This video gives a good insight on the different resources available to help students in Canada and specifically in Ontario with school. There are student lines of credit that banks such as TD Bank offer. There is also osap which is a loan given by the government. Most of this money will be paid back but there are bursaries in which is money given to you that you do not pay back. The government also funds students to go to school out of the country. Lastly, there are scholarships in which students can apply to in order to receive some free money for school. This is useful information because if i had known about all these options before going into school, it would have been helpful financially.

This video tells the experience of a Ryerson University student in Toronto. She shares how she keeps up with her financial situation to be able to attend post secondary education. She takes on 3 jobs in the summer, a part time job while in school and she has an osap loan. Other than school, there are other expenses that someone has to worry about such as rent and food. Keeping up with all this with the pricey tuitions Ontario post secondary schools have is not easy. According to this student, she wishes she did not have to worry about money while in school but rather just focus on school.

I found it useful to hear this personal experience because it gave me more insight on the lives many students have and the challenges they face. This makes me more empathetic towards those who are struggling to juggle multiple big things in life.

1. What did you learn about the topic that most surprised you?

What surprised me the most, was the amount of students suffering from student loans and the impact it has on their lives. How school expenses are not the only things on their minds but they have other things in which their money needs to be used for and juggling all of it is not easy.

2. Provide a real-life example of how this topic is relevant or interesting for you.
I found this topic interesting because I am a student and my tuition is on the higher end. But thankfully some of the points mentioned in these resources are being applied so I do not end my schooling with debt.
3. Which research did you find most interesting? Why?
I found the video on the Ryerson student the most interesting because she does everything she can to be able to pay her schooling. She juggles multiple jobs when off school and still works while in school. I believe her experience is similar to many students and many can relate to it.
