Problem orientation: “I appreciate your initiative to try something new with our patient. Tell me about your plan to try this out.” I would ask open ended questions to get some information: What evidence supports your choice? What evidence doesn’t support your choice? What further evidence may we need to get a whole picture? Then we would talk about some general SLP concepts related to the behavior being targeted. We would then predict the possible outcomes of the radical treatment idea as it relates to the general concepts related to the behavior being targeted. I would have the student brainstorm other ways to target the behavior. Then I would ask the student if they would like to make any changes to their plan or proceed with the plan. If it is not harmful for the patient, it may be worthwhile for the student to try out their plan so that they can see the result and we can then discuss what worked, what didn’t, and how it can be done differently next time.

Strategy: The patient has requested that you assign a different student to work with them because they don’t think that the student clinician is adequately prepared… “Susan, it seems that you are a bit uncomfortable working with Mrs. Smith. I’d like to change your assignment to give you a better experience.”

Spontaneity: “Susan, tell me about your experience with Mr. Smith.” After listening to her response, broaching the subject: “Mr. Smith has expressed some concerns about working with you (provide descriptive feedback provided by patient). Let’s talk about what you think is happening and how we could improve our communication with our patients. Let’s try to problem solve and when we have a plan, I will discuss it with Mr. Smith. If he is amenable, we will work with him together. If he does not agree with the plan, you can focus on working with our other patients or we can try to find you another opportunity with a different clinician at this time.”

Neutrality: Your student has missed two days of clinic this month and she is calling to inform you that she needs to leave town unexpectedly and will be out again. “Fine, whatever.”

Empathy: “I’m sorry to hear you will not be able to come in. I see that you have missed XXX days as well. It seems things have been very difficulty for you lately. Being in clinic is important for your training, but I understand that there might be other life situations happening. Let's set up a meeting to talk about how I can support you in being able to come to the clinic.”

Superiority: Your student is currently taking a class that is very relevant to the clinic that the two of you share. One day she reports to you that Dr. Atlas said that the procedures and method of treatment that you had instructed her to use were wrong and needed to be changed. “I’m the one with 20 years’ experience. He doesn’t actually treat clients, so how would he know?”

Equality: “It seems Dr. Atlas and I have different opinions. Let’s talk about it. Tell me about what he would do differently.” After listening to the student, I would ask for relevant sources of information (e.g., articles) if it is something I am unfamiliar with or give the student my opinion based on prior experience. I would let the student know it is my opinion but here is the evidence I have that supports my practice. We could then discuss how the approaches differ. I would be open to observing the student try a new approach if there is evidence for it’s use and would ask the student to show me how to do it. I would also look into learning more about the new approach.

Certainty: “I know you didn’t turn in your work when you said you did.”

Provisionalism: “I think I didn’t receive your work. Do you remember when you sent/gave it to me?”
