Polk said it was America's destiny to go from the west coast to the east coast, and at that time Mexico controlled modern day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and  Texas. The war started when America wanted to expand Texas borders to Rio Grande but Mexico said no that they stay where they are but the USA pushed to Rio Grande anyway and the war began.

All women were supposed to do was housework and take care of the children. If a woman did work outside the house she earned about half as much as a man did. Girls had very few educational opportunities. Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from medical school and opened an Infirmary for Women and Children.

The Settlers after the revolutionary war wanted to expand its territory. so they set off and the settlers just went in and took the land from the native Americans who had been there for centuries before them.After they gained the northwest territory they did the Louisianan purchase from France and then fought for the rest of the land threw the Mexican American war and other things here and there.

Then gold was found in California and the start of westward expansion began.
