The Mexican American war started in 1846 and ended in 1848.President James K. Polk said it was America's destiny to go from the west coast to the east coast, and at that time Mexico controlled modern day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The war started when America wanted to expand Texas borders to Rio Grande but Mexico said no that they stay where they are but the USA pushed to Rio Grande anyway and the war began.
http://www.history.com/topics/mexican-american-war
This is what the USA looked like before the war.
Alex Quam
