We would always hurry down the stairs in the morning to make sure we didn't miss even a second of Meet the Press on Sunday mornings. My sister and I would reluctantly sip my dad’s coffee just to act like we were older than we were. Needless to say, politics have been around in Marley and my life for a long time. Neither of us realized how much this meant to us until later on in our “political journeys”, as we like to call them.

Ms. Stacy Flannery has been an extremely influential teacher and person in both mine and my sisters life. At pivotal parts in our life, we were given the opportunity to have her as a social studies teacher. Marley had Ms. Flannery for Eastern Religions class her sophomore year. I had her during my junior year for U.S. History. Both of these times were turbulent in our lives for totally different reasons, but rocky nonetheless. I really found my passion and my gift for politics while I was taking Ms. Flannery’s class my junior year. Marley, however, took a bit longer to find this.

When presented with this project, I immediately knew Marley was the one I wanted to interview. Living in D.C. she has a very different perspective on politics now than when she did in Glenview. I knew this would be interesting to ask her how her thoughts have changed since she went off to the epicenter of politics in America. I also wanted an excuse to talk to my sister. We have had a somewhat rocky relationship, but it has been steadily improving since she went to college.

After this conversation, I feel like a learned a lot from my sister. Not necessarily in the words that she said, but how she said it and what other memories she brought up. I realized how influential she has been upon my love and passion for current events and politics. She has influenced me not only in that but also how I act toward certain issues in my life. My sister has taught me an infinite number of intangible lessons like passion and integrity and how to make change and how to teach. And how to be a sister.
