         <description><![CDATA[<div>Rules to instill in the classroom for primary students<br><br>Elementary School Students of an International School Setting: <br><br><strong>Morning Routine: <br></strong>-Greet students at the door.<br>-Ask them what they did yesterday after school (Primes them for English)<br>-Come in, sit down, and write the lesson objective in their notebook(It is always written on the board with the date as is school policy). <br>-Ask if anyone needs to go to the bathroom now<br>-Begin lesson. <br><br><strong>Lesson Procedures: <br>-</strong>Raise your hand to speak.<br>-Have fun<br>-Make mistakes (in ESL, all my students know that I like mistakes as it keeps them trying and to break through the wall of learning a second language.)  <br>-Always use please and thank you when speaking.  I instill this very early in my students in order to build positive relationships with other students and teachers in the school. <br>-If independent study, please work quietly and respect your fellow peers. <br>-If group work, have fun, I will monitor and provide feedback at the END of the activity to not disrupt fluency. <br><br><strong>Lesson End:<br></strong>-Small formative assessment to gauge the students and if they retained lesson material. <br>-Ask students what they liked about the lesson and what they didn't like so that I can shape my lessons better to their needs. <br>-Reading logs that students have and parents need to sign off on every night to show their reading progression.  Students will read for 5-10 minutes at the end of the lesson. <br>-Always say goodbye and can't wait for the next lesson with them. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Items we have established in our 5th grade classroom:<br><br><strong>-arrival in the morning</strong>: 8:30 teachers wait for kids at the doorway of the classroom, greeting them as they come in. Kids can choose a handshake, fist bump, or simply a smile!<br><strong>-Daily morning routine:</strong> Unpack, Check the morning message (answer the message if applicable), take out your morning work folder, do your morning work until morning meeting starts<br><strong>- Morning Meeting</strong>: every day at 8:45. Kids transition to MM by clearing their desk, putting morning work away in their folders, and coming to their <strong>circle spots</strong>.<br>-<strong>STAR</strong>: protocol for active listening<br><strong>-Communication signals: </strong>quiet and respectful. <br>To comment or ask a question, kids can raise their hand or give a <strong>silent thumb.</strong><br>To show that you want to add on to what another person has just said, kids can use the <strong>adding on sign.<br></strong>To respectfully show agreement or disagreement, kids can use the <strong>agree/disagree signs.<br>- Rug Spots, Circle spots: </strong>Kids have an assigned place to sit on the rug depending on the task. For mini-lessons, kids sit on their rug spots (rows of kids.) For morning meeting or any sort of sharing activity, we can use circle spots. <strong> </strong><br><br></div>]]></description>

Students have line orders for transitioning between classrooms, are transitioned by teachers and expected to do so silently.</li><li><strong>Arrival: </strong>Students arrive between 7:20-7:40, silently come into the classroom to greet their teachers. They unpack silently at their desk, take out their homework and wait to be called up by their teacher to check their daily homework grade</li><li><strong>Morning Routine: </strong>Classes have a morning meeting with their homeroom teacher and greet one another. Often they will go over announcements for the day or anything that differs from the daily schedule.</li><li><strong>Communication Signals: </strong>Our school does the same thing as Megan's! Students use basic sign language to signal when they need a bathroom break, water, to sharpen their pencil, or go to their backpack. They also have signals for agreement/disagreement as well as "adding on" to someone's thoughts.</li><li><strong>Seating: </strong>Students have assigned seats for each classroom. There is a <strong>STAR  </strong>expectation for elementary school, but I have never enforced this for middle school.</li><li><strong>Turn &amp; Talk</strong>: For partner and small group collaboration, students do turn and talks to reinforce concepts.</li></ul>]]></description>

This can be a review of something seen in the previous class, a new topic, a journal entry, etc. </li><li>Depending on bell ringer, it may be discussed in pairs, as a whole class, or not at all. </li><li>Class discusses objective and how it will be achieved in the day’s class, and moving forward, and how it may be applied in other classes or the real world.</li></ol><div><br><strong>End of class:</strong></div><ol><li>Class discusses if objective was met and how they feel about the content discussed.</li></ol><div><em>Easy ways to check understanding:</em></div><ul><li><strong>Red, Yellow, Green: </strong>Students hold up a red, yellow, or green post-it to express comprehension. Green means they understood it well, yellow not sure, and red not much.</li><li><strong>Fingers</strong>: Students hold up 0-5 fingers depending on how well they comprehended the content of that day’s class (0 being not at all, 5 being very well). To simplify this, students can give a thumbs up or a thumbs down. </li><li><strong>Exit slip: </strong>Students answer a question or questions about that day's content on a small piece of paper and hand it to teacher. <em>These questions may come from the lesson focused questions in that day's lesson plan. </em></li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a teacher, improvisation is an important skill to possess and sometimes things don’t go according to plan. When you notice something isn’t working for a particular student, it may be time to intervene and adapt part of the lesson to better accommodate the student(s). <br><br>Another time when breaking away from the Co-Plan can be <em>part of the plan</em> is when demonstrating what <em>not</em> to do in class when going over expectations, rules, procedures, transitions, etc.<br><br><strong>Pros:</strong></div><ul><li>Breaking a routine can be a reward</li><li>Can inject energy into what may have grown repetitive or stale</li><li>Can demonstrate what not to do</li><li>Can enhance student understanding of particular concepts</li></ul><div><br><strong>Cons:</strong></div><ul><li>May not be as well thought out as the original plan which can cause issues with transitions and overall behavior/focus in class</li><li>May not have the supplies/materials needed to effectively improvise</li><li>May not be organized</li><li>Lack of time to meet lesson objectives when moving away from a lesson plan</li></ul>]]></description>

Please respect the rules so that we can maximize learning time together. Thank you for your cooperation!                                                                                 CLASS EXPECTATIONS                                                                                     1. Respect yourself, the teacher and others Show respect for the teacher, yourself and others at all times. Respect other’s property. Avoid touching or writing on anything that does not belong to you (including desks, textbooks, walls, whiteboard,etc.) Be Principle, responsible and self-management.                                                                2. Put forth your best effort at all times Always do your own best work. Put learning ahead of getting good grades. Put quality ahead of just getting it done.                                                                                       3. Be prepared for class each day Come prepared with all the materials necessary.                                                                                                           4. Follow directions when given Be Principle                                             5. Pay attention, participate and ask questions Be inquiry, a good communicator, thinker, open-minded and knowledgeable                           6. Take responsibility for your actions Be reflective                                                                            CLASS RULES                                                                                                     1. Turn off cell phone &amp; electronic devices: If your cell phone goes off, I will take it away for the class.                                                                           2. Arrive to class on time &amp; ready to learn: I will take attendance within the first ten mins. If you miss class time for 15 mins, you will be marked absent, your parents will receive a phone call from the school.                       3. Never line up at the door before class dismissal.                                    4. Do not cheat, plagiarize, or copy work: Cheat and copy are totally unacceptable. If I see you cheating or copying on any assignment, you will get ZERO for that assignment and will not allow you to redo it for credit.                                                                                                                   5. Do your best work and turn your assignment in on time: The assignment turn-in tray is near the door on your way out. Be sure to have your name and period on and turn it in on the right spot.                  6. NEVER toss anything in the classroom. Walk to the trash bin and throw you run wanted the item in the trash or recycle bin.                         7. Eating and drinking are not permitted when we practice speaking and reading.                                                                                                                8. All drinking bottles and cups must have a sealable cap. Pops are not allowed on the desk when it is open.                                                              9. The student must get permission from the teacher when he/she needs to use the bathroom. Take a bathroom pass with you before you leave the classroom. Remember, One person at a time. You need to come back and return the pass as soon as possible in case others need to use it. You are not allowed to use the bathroom for the first 15 mins and last 15 mins of class time according to school rules.
