In addition, I’ll focus on starry night brushstrokes creating movement and vibration to add to the symbolism. Yellow background!!

This is an image of a sculpture near the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. I chose this monument because it is one that I had always wanted to see and then when I ended up driving by it this summer it was quite underwhelming. So the irony of this sculpture is the idea I wanted to capture. I want to paint this monument with much brighter and saturated colors and a duller background.

This is the Tropaeum Aplpium in La Turbie, France. The monument is a ruin and I find how it collapsed very interesting. The cracks in the pillars give what remains of the piece new details and dementions. I want to capture what remains while also highlight the juxtaposition between the stable foundation the crumbling monument.

This is the Sunken Ship (S.S. Palo Alto) in Aptos, CA. It is a ship that sunk in World War I and is still decaying on the beach today. I grew up in Aptos and went to the beach often to surf and swim near the ship. The ship has always been nostalgic and haunting to me. I want to keep this monument as unsaturated as possible, other than the ship, and make the whole sky white with small bits of pale yellow and blues. My camera perspective in this photo is far away and tilted but I want to adjust that to be closer in the painting.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura.
Crafted in the 1200's, this statue had stood through time and human action. It has gone through metamorphosis, originally being a wooden statue, then a bronze, facing decay and graffiti, that statue of Amitābha still stands. I chose this because, I planned to see this statue the same week I had to depart. I was really sad to have missed out, especially to go inside the Buddha head, but this statue has been standing since the 1200s. It will stand for a few more years, until I can return.

This is a photo of the pool house that my dad remodeled completely on his own. I chose it because (since its where I stay when I visit my parents) it is a monument of home to me. It is also a monument to the self sufficiency of my dad that I aspire to have, he learned how to do most of the building through youtube tutorials. The building isn’t the only thing in the photo because I believe that a monument can be a place, not just a singular object, especially when the surroundings aid in representing the mood that the artist wishes to convey. I want to paint this in a style similar to romanticism/ Hudson River School, with luxurious colors and fuzzy highlights in the windows that create the same sense of cozy warmth that I experience when I visit my childhood home.

For this project I want to paint the Statue of Liberty. The idea I have is to imagine it as it would remain in a futuristic society, where it is viewed as more of a relic like we view greek statues now. I would paint it in muted colors and have parts of the arm and head broken off to show the passage of time.

This is the Temple of Kukulkan, a pyramid in Chichen Itza, located in the Yucantan peninsula. Kukulkan was first constructed by the Mayans, while the Toltecs built the Temple of Kukulkan on top of it. I have always found this temple beautiful, which is why I decided to use this as my reference for my monument. Since the colors in the original image were a bit dull, I want to paint with more saturated colors, as I hope to make the piece pop more!

This is Lottas fountain in San Francisco. It was built in 1875, making it one of the oldest monuments in San Francisco. This fountain was the meeting place of all of the survivors of the 1906 earthquake. They met here during the aftermath of the earthquake and fire. Every year there is a commemoration of the earthquake, and the original survivors would gather. Nowadays there is still an event every year to remember the survivors and draw attention to earthquake preparedness. I learned about this fountain at a very young age and have gone to see it many times since the 1906 earthquake is such a big part of San Francisco history. I would like to recreate this fountain, really focusing on the shading, and the light and dark points of the piece to create lots of depth

This is the sphinx near the Pyramids of Giza. Over the weekend I read some articles from a geologist that hypothesizes the sphinx is much older than the country of Egypt. Meaning it could be so much older than we thought, and he thinks this because the water erosions would take it much longer than what it was. I want to imagine what it looked like in the ancient times, and add as many bright colors as possible. I see this statue really popping out of the background. I want to give it a total makeover and give it as much feeling and emotion through color as possible.

The Taj Mahal is an awe-inspiring monument to love. Located in central India, the Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by emperor Shah Jahan as the final resting place for his wife - Mumtaz Mahal - who had died earlier that year, giving birth to their fourteenth child. The spectacular project employed 22,000 artisans and 1,000 elephants, using a vast array of precious stones imported from all over Asia. The mausoleum was finally finished in 1648, and has since been considered the greatest example of Indo-Islamic architecture in the world. I chose this monument because it reminds me that it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.
