Background:
According to http://www.ala.org/rt/glbtrt/award/stonewall
The first and most enduring award for GLBT books is the Stonewall Book Awards, sponsored by the American Library Association's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table. Since Isabel Miller's Patience and Sarah received the first award in 1971, many other books have been honored for exceptional merit relating to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experience.

About the award:
The Stonewall Book Award-Barbara Gittings Literature Award, the Stonewall Book Award-Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award and the Stonewall Book Award-Mike Morgan and Larry Romans Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award are presented to English language works published the year prior to the announcement date. The award is announced in January/February and presented to the winning authors or editors at the American Library Association Annual Conference in June or July. The award winners each receive a commemorative plaque and $1,000.

Importance:
By highlighting these stories they are given importance. By creating an award specifically for the involvement of LGBQT characters and themes, we as a society normalize and promote the acceptance of this community. This award, like many others, helps its readers to build empathy by providing authors the recognition deserved for the creation of diverse characters. The audience of these books needs to be reflected in the stories told.

This 2015 Stonewall honor book focuses on the relationship between twins Noah and Jude. These two are one soul sharing two bodies. Both artists, their lives are forever changed by a tragic event, causing a rift at the core of their relationship. This story opens on Noah, a closeted gay teen who is being heavily bullied and abused. Noah finds a love interest that causes him to reflect on the things he has long been suppressing. Although not centered on this one relationship, the story does allow us to experience the crush, the falling, the heartbreak, the betrayal, the embarrassment, and the acceptance of a young gay teen coming to terms with his sexuality.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20820994-i-ll-give-you-the-sun?ac=1&from_search=true

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan 2010

This novel is a tale of two boys who share more than just a name. This story is different than many others because of the nature of the collaboration between the two authors. The even/odd chapters are split by author, and the capitalization or lack there of distinguishes will from Will. These two lives intersect in the school's musical, and are told commonly through technology and the use of character's chats. This book shows one male as the only member of a gay straight alliance, and the other as a depressed closeted teen pining after an online catfish "Isaac" in disguise. This novel highlights many of the true negative emotions faced by many closeted and out gay teens. Depression and suicide or thoughts of suicide are twice as common in LGBTQ teens than straight teens, and this book highlights an often unnoticed problem in young adults.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6567017-will-grayson-will-grayson?ac=1&from_search=true

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz 2013

Two boys meet at a pool at the beginning of summer and discover that their lives are completely different from one another, but they both share classic names. This book is so important for many reasons. The struggles of identity take many forms throughout the novel. Aristotle is having a much more difficult time with the acceptance of his affections for Dante, showcasing the differing stages of self-acceptance seen in gay youth. Dante feels comfortable loving Aristotle because of the difference in family dynamics as well as his own self image. This book also touches on the subject of the ill treatment of the transgender community when Ari's brother is sentenced to life in prison after brutally killing a transvestite. This is not the only depiction of violence against LGBTQ members. This story shows a very real side to the horrible and unfortunately common treatment (physically, verbally, and emotionally) of members of this community.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12000020-aristotle-and-dante-discover-the-secrets-of-the-universe
