Growing up, during summer break, I usually gather my cousins and some friends to play teacher and students every afternoon. I play the role of a teacher while they were my students. We use recycled notebooks (unwritten pages from and old notebooks), a piece of plywood as our board and chalks I took from my mother's classroom (Yep, she's a teacher). This lasted until Summer Break of 2002 (The year I have finished my Grade School). At this time, I have never imagined myself becoming a teacher for real, I just do ot for fun.

In High School, I am fascinated with the stories of my teachers; their successes and failures and how they were able to change their lives and the lives of others. So, I decided to pursue Education as my Degree in College and there I have met people who have shaped me to become the teacher I am today. And one thing I won't ever forget from one my professors in one of our class was her words, she said, ”Education is the most valuable possession one can ever have. It cannot be stolen and it serves as a social equalizer - alleviating not just your and your family's social status but also the people around you. And as a teacher, we must take steps to touch one soul at a time and make sure to spark a fire in their hearts to champion life's adversities.”

And up to this day, these were the words I took to my heart, my guiding philosophy in keeping the passion for teaching burning in heart. ❤️‍🔥

I am passionate about teaching because I come from a family of teachers and I’m surrounded by passionate people. This is my dream since I was in Grade three that someday I will become a teacher.

My first duty in DepEd is a substitute teacher at JP Laurel Elementary School one of the schools here in General Santos City. I was assigned to the Grade two level.

First week of my duty, I noticed that some of my learners are not cooperating with me and I wondered why. So, I decided to conduct an individual reading so that I can get their reading background. On the following day, I divided the class into two groups. The first group is those learners that can read and the second group are those learners who can’t read.

At first, it was really hard for me to teach but I continue teaching because I want to help my learners then one day one of my parents thank me because her son can read already. I’m so very happy when I heard the comments from my parent.
Now I am teaching in Grade four and I am almost 13 years in the service including being a substitute teacher.

Hello, everyone. I am Grace G. Basilisco from Argao National High School, Argao Cebu. Within 8 years of teaching ( almost 8 years in a university, and 7 months under DepEd), I had seen and felt the struggles of the learners, especially during the pandemic and post-pandemic. Those times of "Kaya Natin To" and "Bahala na malate, basta makaskwela lang" were manifestations that the learners were really eager to learn at school and finish their education. Most of my students are coming from mountainous barangays, wherein everyday they have to travel. Some of them have limited money for allowance to no allowance at all, which means they have to walk. Some of them do not have food for breakfast. They just have to cook rice and buy chichirya as viand. I salute those learners who can manage to go to school despite of struggles they are facing. They are courageous learners and dream doers. I am very happy to see them sailing, sailing until they will achieve the desires of their heart.
