Dear Ethan, I am writing to you because I believe you should read the memoir, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou. Since you are a younger student and aren't fully mature yet, I believe this book is an excellent starting point to show how important it is to keep family close and learn that being nice to people is important in making the world a better place. I also thought this memoir was very intriguing and I think you may find it that way too!
From, Ryan

For Maya I chose the word 'Compassion.' I feel that this word perfectly describes who she is as a person and how she reacts to others doing harm to her mother. "I didn't mind him (Willie) using us to look good. In fact, I would've pretended to be his daughter if he wanted me to." (Angelou 13) This quote is a great example of Maya's compassion towards other people and helping them out as needed. Another quote to support the word I chose would be "It was a large heart with lots of hearts growing smaller inside, and piercing from the outside rim to the smallest heart was an arrow." (Angelou 33) I thought this quote was a great example of Angelou's sympathy for her mother after the girls had made fun of her and she stood her ground. Maya understands what just happened and wants to make her feel better

Memorable Quote

"If Mr. Freeman was gone, did that mean Bailey was out of danger? And if so, if I told him, would he still love me?" (Angelou 81) I thought that this quote stuck with me because it made me feel terrible about the situation. During the whole memoir, Angelou is describing herself as a very insecure black girl who already faces challenges with racism and getting made fun of about her "ugliness." I thought that it made her situation much worse because of the fear that if she told someone the treatment people gave her may become worse, or they may shun her from society completely.

Remake of Cover

If I were to remake the cover, I would choose this picture of a bird letting itself free of its cage. During the whole memoir, Angelou is struggling because she is trapped in a cycle of staying in the same place and receiving negative attention from the people in her life. I believe the purpose of the memoir was for Maya to show us how she found herself and what caused her to lead the life she did. I think that breaking free from your "cage" is a good step to becoming free or your own person.

This meme is perfect for describing this memoir. Angelou takes what she has from inside herself to make the life she lives better for herself and the people around her, especially for her new born son in the end. She doesn't let her past define her or let the future scare her from using her full potential.
