Muslim ruler of al Andalus faced many challenges however. After the death of abd al-Rahman lll in 961 civil war erupted. The increasingly powerful Christian kings of northern Spain steadily took over more of al Andalus. Spains last Muslim city ending almost 800 year of muslim rule in western Europe. Muslims had first conquered Spain in 711 and much of the region came under umayyad control by 750. From the city of Cordoba he established a powerful independent state called al-Andalus and refused to acknowledge Abbasid authority in Baghdad. Al-Andalus flour under the umayyad dynasty developing a thriving economy.

The ottomans formed the largest Muslim empire of the time. However it was not the only one Safvids dynasty became rivals of the Sunni Ottomans. The Safavids also made Persia into a cultural center by encouraging the immigration of shiite scholars and attracting craftspeople, artustsm and traders if many nationalities. The Safavid Empire reached its peak between 1588 and 1629 during the region of shah Abbas. It then declined steadily under the leadership of weak shahs. The Safvid Empire arose when a youthful leader named Ismail united the Persian kingdoms into an independent t state in 1501. He took the Persaun little for king shah. Ismail rapidly expanded Oersuas borders north and west by bodily invading ottoman lands. The Safavids and Ottomans went on to fight a long war that lasted more than 100 years.

The Mughals were nomads from central Asia who invaded India. Shah Jahan commissioned India's most famous building the Taj mahal in memory of his beloved wife who died at a younge age. The Mughal empire reached its peak under Akbar grandson shah Jahan who reigned from 1628 to 1658.
