Quote 1(Ralph) :
"He [Ralph] jumped down from the terrace. The sand was thick over his black shoes and the heat hit him. He became conscious of the weight of clothes, kicked his shoes off fiercely and ripped off each stocking with its elastic garter in a single movement. Then he leapt back on the terrace, pulled of his shirt, and stood there among the skull-like coconuts with green shadows from the palms and forest sliding over his skin. He undid the snake-clasp of his belt, lugged off his shorts and pants, and stood there naked, looking at the dazzling beach and the water." -Page 10

Reasons for Picking:

It exaggerates how different Ralph is from Piggy. The quote introduces the boys' slow detachment from society.

Discussion:
Symbolism or Metaphor
- This quote shows how they are beginning to disregard the values and disciplines taught to them by adults, like how you must always wear clothes in public.
---------------------------------------------------------
Quote 2 (Ralph and Piggy):
"Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds.
“A stone.”
“No. A shell.”"- Page 15

Reason for Picking:
I chose this quote because it introduces the shell and creates more symbolism.

Discussion:
Symbolism:
Lord of the Flies tackles many topics such as power. This quote is shows how power is usually given to people by others. Later in the book, Ralph uses the shell to attract other survivors and to become the chief of all the boys. Even though Piggy was the one who discovered it and determined the shell's use, it was still Ralph who used the shell to acquire power.
-------------------------------------------------------
Quote 3 (Ralph and the Choir):
"Within the diamond haze of the beach something dark was fumbling along. Ralph saw it first, and watched until the intentness of his gaze drew all eyes that way. Then the creature stepped from mirage onto clear sand, and they saw that the darkness was not all shadow but mostly clothing. The creature was a party of boys" Page 19

Reason for Picking:
The quote seems to be foreshadowing the differences between both groups of boys so far.
Discussion:
Foreshadowing or Symbolism:
The quote describes the choir boys as a mysterious and potentially dangerous creature. Granted, this description is given before they are nearby but, it does suggest that the two groups might begin to hate each other later in the story. The name given to the group, Hunters, also foreshadows them possibly killing or hunting down others. Symbolism might be shown through the differences between the choir boys and Piggy & Ralph. While Piggy and Ralph have yet to create order within their group they are still shown to not have problems, whereas the choir boys are introduced with a myriad of problems such as a neglectful leader and immediate injury.
-------------------------------------------------------
Quote 4 (Ralph and the Choir boys):
"Ralph looked at him, eager to offer something.
"The choir belongs to you[Jack Merridew], of course"
"The could be the army-"
"Or hunters-"
[...]
"Jack's in charge of the choir. They can beb-what do you want them to be?"
"Hunters."" Page 23

Reason for Picking:
This pick of dialogue was chosen because it shows how power hungry both Jack Merridew and Ralph are.

Discussion:
Symbolism:
The line shows how strong people's desire for power can be. Earlier when Merridew lost the vote to become chief, he blushing because he was mortified by the results. Surprisingly however, after Ralph won and told him that he can keep the Choir boys, Jack Merridew begins to smile again. Jack displays all leaders biggest fears, losing their power.
-------------------------------------------------------
Quote 5 (Ralph, Simon, and Jack):
"He [Jack Merridew] snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk. Next time there would be no mercy he looked round fiercely, darling them to contradict." Page 31

Reason for Picking:
This shows the boys becoming more barbic and less civilized.

Discussion:
Foreshadowing:
The quote suggests that later in the book if they ever need to fight, they will not hesitate to attack.

- A "fair boy" makes his way out of the lagoon to a beach. On the beach he met a chubby boy who is intellectual and wears thick glasses. They both introduce themselves to each other as Ralph and Piggy.
- They talk about how their plane crashed in midst of a war. All the boys were scattered and couldn't find the pilot. Both of them believe that the other boys survived and are around the island somewhere.
- The fat boy falls behind Ralph because he has asthma. Ralph says that his dad who’s in the navy will rescue them but Piggy said that the pilot told them that an atomic bomb exploded and killed everyone. They both find a shell and use it as a trumpet which summons the other boys onto the beach. The oldest being twelve and youngest being six. In the group their is a boys choir that is led by Jack. They march in two lines and Jack tells them to pay attention.
- The boys decide to elect a leader. The choir boys chose Jacke while the rest of the boys chose Ralph. Ralph wins and asks the choir boys to be the hunters and for Jack to lead them. Ralph, Jack, and Simon go to explore the island, ignoring piggys request to be picked. The three boys leave and go across the island.
- They find a large rocknear the edge of a cliff. The boys push the rock over the cliff saying it was “like a bomb”. They climb the mountain and Ralph looks around and says “this belongs to us”. On their way back they find a wild pig tangled in vines. Jack took his knife and tried to kill it but was hesitated and the pig was able to escape. Jack said that the next time they see an animal he will kill it.

Quote 1: "(Jack) tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up. 'I went on. I thought, by myself—' The madness came into his eyes again. 'I thought I might kill.'"

Reason for picking: This shows how the island is starting to turn the kids savage and lose their ability to show mercy. Another thought is that the island is starting to reveal Jack's true nature.

Discussion: Foreshadowing
This could be a nod to the future where Jack could start turning more savage and start killing more than just boars.

Quote 2: "Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for [the littluns] the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands."

Reason for picking: This shows the difference between characters. While Jack is quickly going savage and Ralph is yearning for control, Simon is still helping out those in need, while disregarding all the battle for power going on right in front of him.

Discussion: Symbolism
This could symbolize certain people in the world today who disregard real problems. Some people will ignore the issues going on in front of them simply to live a better life. This may be a way to live optimistically, but some problem cannot be ignored and will catch up to you eventually.

Quote 3: The ground was hardened by an accustomed tread and as Jack rose to his full height he heard something moving on it. He swung back his right arm and hurled the spear with all his strength.

Reason for picking: This quote makes it sound like Jack has hunted like this before.

Discussion: Jack is moving with an accustomed tread. It is implied here that Jack is becoming a predator who is accustomed to hunting, although he is not very experienced. Maybe it's not about how experienced he is but how natural he is at the hunt.

Quote 4: "Jack himself shrank at this cry with a hiss of indrawn breath, and for a minute became less a hunter than a furtive thing, ape-like among the tangle of trees."

Reason for picking: Jack sounds very much like he is being described as an animal.

Discussion: A lot of the book is focused on the idea that Jack is not turning savage, but was savage all along and is just being who he really is- an untamed animal.

Quote 5: "'Rescue? Yes, of course! All the same, I’d like to catch a pig first—' He snatched up his spear and dashed it into the ground. The opaque, mad look came into his eyes again. Ralph looked at him critically through his tangle of fair hair."

Reason for picking: Jack has interesting priorities.

Discussion: This quote implies that Jack does not care about getting rescued as much as hunting a pig. He would rather keep his pride but lose his sanity by staying on the island than be rescued. This shows how he is drifting farther away from society.

-The boys have developed a daily routine. In the morning, everything seems cool and sweet. In the afternoon, it becomes really hot with has flickering images over the water. Piggy disregards it and tells the others that it is only the light shining on the water. In the evening, it's terrifying since the temperatures becomes cooler and some boys get nightmares.

- The little lens, usually separated from the older boys, mostly eat fruits and play by the day. They also talk with each other about the "beastie". They suffer from diarrhea due to the excessive amount of eating the fruits in the island.

-The older boys torment the little lens. They destroy the sand castles made by the little lens.

- Jack becomes obsessed with hunting the pig. He paints his face to hunt the pig. He hunts with other boys.

- Ralph and Piggy see a ship yet notice that their signal fire has gone out.

-Ralph gets furious with Jack since it is his group's responsibility to maintain the signal fire.

- Jack and the other hunters manage to kill the pig. Piggy complained about Jack's irresponsibility. Jack slaps Piggy causing for one of his lenses to break. Ralph and Jack have a heated conversation. Jack resents Ralph for going to Piggy and using his broken glasses to re-lit the signal fire.

- Ralph uses the conch shell to gather the boys for a meeting and Ralph explains that this meeting is for a serious matter and not for fun.

- During the meeting he tells the boys about the tasks (store water, build shelters, keep the signal fire going) they were supposed to do but ended up not doing. He also emphasizes that the fire is the most important thing on the island.

- Ralph saw that people were becoming afraid and he didn't know why, so he thought that they should discuss each one of their fears so that they can overcome them. Jack blows the conch shell and calls the littleuns cry babies. He tells them that he's been all over the island and that there was not beast and Piggy agreed with him.

- A littleun stood up and said that he saw the beast the previous night. However, Simon says that it must have just been him that the littleun saw, because he went walking in the forest that night. Another littleun stood up and said his name, address, and tried to tell them his phone number but he could not remember and started to cry.

- When Percival, the littleun that cried, recovered he said that the beast comes from the sea which terrified the boys.

- Simon took the conch and said that what if the boys are the beast. Many of the boys think that the beast might be a ghost. Ralph held a vote and made the kids raise their hand if they believed that the beast was a ghost and majority of the kids raised their hands.

- Piggy took the conch and said that ghosts don't exist. He then asks if the boys are humans or savages?. He mentioned the hunters letting the fire go out and Jack ripped the conch from him.

- Ralph said that Jack is breaking the rules and Jack questions Ralphs leadership. Jack says he does not care about the rules and that he will hunt the beast and kill it. He starts a chant and everyone but Ralph, Simon, and Piggy join him.

- Piggy told Ralph to blow the conch but he refused. He thought "what if no one responded?". He considered stepping down as chief but piggy protested. He believes that everything will turn into chaos and that Jack would target him.

- The three of them wish that adults were around to make everything better. Ralph wishes that the adults would send him a sign.

-Politics
Politicians use fear as a tactic to keep them in power and control the masses. Politicians also tell the people that they will keep them safe. A similar thing happens in the book when all the boys are scared about the beast. Jack tells them that the hunters will kill it if it does exist.

-Early Culture/Superstition
Most early cultures start with people creating myths and legends about mysterious beings which could or could not exist. A similar thing happens to the boys as they start believing in a mythical beast. (This could also show them devolving into savage, uneducated tribes)

-Disorder/lack of proper authority
In real life most anarchies do not work because of the struggle of power and other major factors. In the book, a similar concept is in play as there is no "real" leader as no one follows the rules previously established such as gathering water, building shelters, and excrementing/urinating in the right place.

Kids
- The twins thought that the paratrooper was the beast. They got scared of their imagination. They exaggerated what they saw using their imaginations. Both of them described 'the beast' as "furry, had wings, eyes, and claws" (Golding, page 100).
Kids becomes scared of their own imagination. Famous stories come from imaginative descriptions of beasts. The beast is similar to monsters under the bed.

Tradition/ Rules
- They had one major rule in the island- listen to the person holding the conch. Jack tells Piggy "We don't need the conch anymore" (Golding, page 102).
= Traditions are gradually ending. People make up new rules as society is developing. Traditions end when we disobey and don't practice the rules anymore.

Speeches of Leaders
- Ralph was persuading the other boys to his side instead of Jack's through the use of rhetorical question. He asked, "Don't you all want to be rescued?" (Golding, 102).
= Leaders/ politicians use pathos to persuade their audience to choose their side especially during elections.

Anxiety
- Simon thought of the "dreadful feeling of the pressure of personality, could say what they would as though they were speaking to only one person" (Golding, 103).
=The narrator's descriptions of Simon's thoughts about talking in front of a crowd are similar to what people with anxiety, introverts, and stage frights experience.

Quote 1
“[Ralph is] like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper chief.” (Jack)

Reason for picking: I chose this because I thought that it shows how different the Two boys have on leading the others.

Discussion: Jack thinks that intelligence isn’t as strong as physical strength and that physical strength is needed more than intelligence.

Quote 2
He giggled and flecked them while the boys laughed at his reeking palms. Then Jack grabbed Maurice and rubbed the stuff [blood] over his cheeks.

Reason for picking: I chose this because it shows how the boys are already being detached from civilization and are starting to become more savage and cruel.

Discussion: The quote illustrates how the boys mask their faces with the blood which make them feel like they aren’t themselves making their actions seem not as bad to them.

Quote 3
"I dunno, Ralph. We just got to go on, that's all. That's what grownups would do." (Piggy)

Reason for picking: I chose this because I think that it shows how Piggy is starting to change his views because of his time on the island.

Discussion: This quote shows how Piggy started to realize that there is no secret way to act as an adult and that they should just keep going however, he realized this too late.

Quote 4
Piggy was […] so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society […] that he helped to fetch wood.

Reason for picking: I chose this because I think that it is good that at least one person is still thinking for the good of society unlike the others who do not care.

Discussion: This quote illustrates how people cannot live in a society where the individuals in that place do not care about the good of society and if you live in that kind of environment there really is not that much of a civilization.

Quote 5
"This head is for the beast. "Give me a drink" (Golding, 150).

Reason for picking: He's demanding
Discussion: This shows his dictatorship.

" Jack: Who's going to join my tribe? [...] I gave you food[...] and my hunters will protect you from the beast. Who will join my tribe?" A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly. The shrill screaming that rose before the beast was like a pain. The beast stumbled into the horseshoe. “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”
The blue-white scar was constant, the noise unendurable. Simon was crying out something about a dead man on a hill.
[...]
The sticks fell and the mouth of the new circle crunched and screamed. The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill. The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws" (Golding, 152-153).

Reasons for picking:
Discussion:

They both die after learning the truth. They both died due to relations to divine entities. They both also died because of/for their beliefs / illusions (Jesus died for his beliefs but Simon died because the boys saw him as something else (Both things that some people consider don't exist). Jesus' death was done for human salvation and to redeem us for our sins. Simon's death was caused by the boy's sins.

Bad Leaders and Priorities
Jack has always been seen as a bad leader, similar to other dictators and generally other bad leaders.
