The downsides of being black in America largely stem from two things: current discrimination, both overt and covert, and the legacy of past racism. Racism by members of society today can manifest itself fairly overtly, or it can be subtle, even in the form of implicit bias. It can affect everything from job prospects to the way one is treated by the police. On the other hand, many of the downsides of being black in America stem from the racism of the past. Due to our history of oppression of African-Americans, African-Americans tend to be poorer and live in dangerous neighborhoods.
