How to make quotations 

1.       Try to use fewer than 6 words 
2.       Use no more than 4 quotes per paragraph 
3.       Jump around from quotes to your own words 
4.       Do not use 2 quotations in a row 
5.       Explain how your evidence (quotation) proves or supports your argument 

Example: use the word wet to say he is suffering but explain how wet is suffering 

6.       The words you use as quotations do not total to your word count.

Theme Statements


What is theme?
  • It is NOT the moral of a story, unless that story is an allegory (a story whose purpose is to teach a lesson).

  • It IS the central idea of a story.

  • A theme must be expressed as a STATEMENT.

  • This theme statement MUST be universal in nature.  This means, it should be generally true for all people.

  • A literary work can have more than one theme.

For example:

The short story “Sentry,” by Fredric Brown suggests that human beings are aggressive and ruthless by nature.

Notice, the theme must be declared in a statement, a sentence with both a subject and a verb.

In “Sentry,” a theme is aggression. }. This is an error.  Too vague!

Homework:  For the above theme statement on “Sentry,” write a multi-paragraph response in this you state this claim and proves it to be true using quotations from the story,
