Me and my student are sailing to explore the unknown "waters"!

My students are like my crew, as their captain, I have my duty to lead our ship to the destination of victory. Exploring unknown waters is like learning new knowledge. During the sailing, some of them are talented mechanical engineers, some are really good at medical service. I will try to help them find their way to fulfill their potential. So in the future, some of them may become new captains of their new ships, some will become excellent engineers, and so on and so forth. We might get lost, but we will keep trying until we succeed in arriving at our destination!

My students are young, vibrant, energetic and with fluidity. They are active and bubbling both physically and mentally. They are interesting and may be labile emotionally at times.

My students are (mostly), engaged, capable young people with the aptitude and capacity to succeed. I therefore view my role as being more 'navigational', providing them with the appropriate resources and materials they need to keep them on the right track.

Most of my UG students went to local schools and therefore followed the UK GCSE / A Level maths curriculum. It places a very high emphasis on learning and applying methods ("here's how to differentiate... now here are 43 almost identical questions on it!"), and not enough emphasis on how to think about or appreciate the beauty of mathematics. So part of our job is to try and unlock that creativity and passion for the subject.

We should not blame the students for lacking this; they are the product of their environment.

I have the pleasure of teaching a diverse cohort of pharmacy students from different countries, backgrounds, upbringings and educational experiences. Each student is a rock climber filled with potential and blessed with their own strengths and weaknesses. They are facing their own challenges to reach the top of the mountain. Therefore, each student must develop their climbing skills to overcome the cliff ledge, and all I can do is help guide the process.

My students represent a large and diverse group of learners. Not only do they differ in their beliefs, identities, personalities and life experiences, they also have varying learning styles and abilities. Some are confident learners who are willing to put their hand up in lectures. Some are more reserved and reluctant to seek help when needed. Some are quick to grasp complex topics, and some take more time to absorb the content. Some prefer to work solo, whilst others prefer the comfort of a group. Teaching a diverse group requires the lecturer to be prepared to offer multiple explanations and differing styles of support, catering to varying learning needs. An approachable teacher is also able to relate to and empathise with a wide range of personalities.

Moving into phase 2 of the medical course is a big life change for the students, academically and personally. They go from attending lectures to travelling to placements daily, working with senior colleagues who they may find intimidating, being critiqued on every aspect of their skills and are still expected to study to learn about new diseases, drugs and guidelines as they go.

This places new restraints onto their time that they have likely not had before on the course or in life. This is not something to be underestimated.

Providing pastoral care is paramount to supporting this transition, as well as making the students aware they are not the only one experiencing the difficulties with this change. Acknowledging their difficulties with them goes a long way to helping them feel supported and hopefully adapt as the year progresses.

My students are like a garden, made up of a variety of individuals, a unique collection of backgrounds, abilities, traits, dreams, and aspirations. Like plants, students learn and grow at their own pace, requiring different amounts of individual attention and tailored nurturing to reach their full potential – and every student, given the right environment, can flourish. As gardens change with the seasons, requiring different care in different conditions, students also change as they grow through the HE system, requiring educators to adapt their teaching and support methods. This highlights the importance of an educators (our!) role in shaping a student through providing an environment conducive to learning and development!

My students are great thinkers but they often forget this. It is a pleasure to see how their emotions change when they discover something new and how this new knowledge changes their inner world. Sometimes they are overwhelmed by the amount of information they receive and lose their motivation to learn. However, what is very impressive is how they come up with creative solutions to overcome these challenges.

diverse and spread out across the world. I chose this image because I have both on-campus and distance learning students this term for the same module. The kids sitting around the globe (the on-campus group) are literally present physically, while the distance learners (the globe) are spread around the entire world, which presents an interesting challenge of designing seminars that can be engaging for students in the same room as me and ones sitting thousands of miles away at their computer.

My students are varied, and at different stages in their growth. Some are confident, and self aware. Others are still much less so, even child like at times. Each of them is attempting to progress and develop, and each requires different input to assist them to do so. What they all need, is a nurturing, supportive environment which allows them the opportunity to execute on their potential to do so.

Having spent a few years as a tutor for high school students and a part-time lecturer in a community college, I've come to see my students as unfinished puzzles. Every semester, they acquire new knowledge from different courses. From what I've noticed, students usually face two common issues: 1. They don't quite understand why they're learning these modules, and 2. They struggle to put all the pieces together. It's like having all the materials for a puzzle but not knowing what they're building or how to go about it.

Constantly trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. The undergraduates are balancing new found independence and responsibilities relating to study and self-care. They are trying to piece together what life will look like in their immediate future as university students as well as their future as professionals. The postgraduates are often trying to gauge how to fit in studying with their work responsibilities and their home life.

I teach a Degree Apprenticeship module that involves students who are already experienced professionals, in particular of this cohort, project managers from various businesses.

Although I myself had been a project manager of real estate developing before I started my PhD, this is quite a learning journey for me as I am sitting in the front row to see how the students' projects progress with great details.
