Government economic data was in trouble. Then came the shutdown.

The ongoing federal government shutdown has significantly disrupted the U.S. government’s ability to collect and release key economic data. Many employees at agencies like the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) have been furloughed, which undermines the production of monthly reports on jobs, inflation, consumer prices, and more.

Because of reduced staffing, data collection—especially from small businesses and households—is weaker, potentially biasing results or forcing cancellations of reports. Some parts of data collection that are automated or electronic may still proceed, but many rely on in-person or resource-intensive methods vulnerable to funding gaps.

The timing is particularly problematic: policymakers, markets, and investors rely on accurate, timely data for decisions (e.g. central bank policy, fiscal outlook). With gaps or delays, private-sector estimates will try to fill the void, but analysts warn they lack the rigor of government data.

Trump announces ceasefire deal to begin ending the war in Gaza

Israel and Hamas made an agreement to the first phase of a peace deal aimed at ending the two-year war that was occuring in Gaza, with assistance from President Donald Trump. The deal they are making includes a temporary ceasefire, the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas, and the release of around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. Israeli forces will also step back from parts of Gaza, and humane aid like food, water, and medicine will be allowed into the region to help civilians who have been suffering in the war. People in Gaza celebrated the news, and Israeli leaders said it was a huge step toward bringing their hostages home. Trump called it a “historic” moment and said it could be the beginning of a lasting peace. However, this is only the first part of a bigger plan, and there are still many obstacles ahead, including deciding who will govern Gaza and how to keep the peace long-term. Some worry that the fighting could start again if either side breaks the deal, but for now, there is hope that the worst of the war may be over.

On October 8, 2025 in Washington an attempt in the Senate to stop President Donald Trump from launching deadly strikes on boats in the Caribbean Sea failed after 51 republicans voted it down. The Trump administration launched the first known deadly strike on a boat allegedly transporting drugs on Sep 2 killing 11 people and placing the U.S. in new legal territory. Since then at least 10 more people have been killed in three strike. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other Trump officials have posted on social media to what appears to be the targeted boat sailing through the water, and then bursting in smoke and flames after the strike. Schiff and the other senators said they have received no information about the identities of the people killed and or evidence that showed the boats were trying to carry drugs into the U.S. Rubio said the boat could have been interdicted but instead "on the presidents order, we blew it up". Lawyers and experts have said even if they were carrying drugs it still puts the Trump administration in murky legal territory.

Russia and Ukraine are going through a war that is affecting a lot people is those states. Some affects that it has is that it also has done millions maybe billions in damage. According to the Washington post it states "On Friday, Russia launched 465 drones and 32 missiles, of which 402 drones and 15 missiles were shot down or redirected, Ukraine’s air force wrote on Telegram. A 7-year-old boy in the southeastern city of Zaporizhian was killed, officials said." This shows that even the kids as little as 7 are getting killed and they didn't even get to experience their life yet. In addition ,Officials say Ukraine’s gas stockpiles, key to the heating system, should be large enough to last most of the winter, and they are hoping to be able to come up with extra money — either by international assistance or bank loans — in time to import any additional gas supplies that will be needed. We need to take action and stop this war before it get even more bad.

Gaza did not fail. We did. Gaza resisted when the world expected it to break. Gaza stood alone when it should never have had to stand alone. Gaza endured despite international abandonment, despite governments that funded its destruction and now celebrate themselves as peacemakers. On November 7, 2023, children stood before cameras at al-Shifa Hospital and spoke in English, not their mother tongue, but in the language of those they thought might save them.” one boy said. “We want medicine, food and education. We want to live as other children live.” Even then, barely a month into the genocide, they had no clean drinking water, no food and no medicine. Now, almost two years later, US President Donald Trump posts that he is “very proud” of the signing of the first phase of his “peace plan”. French President Emmanuel Macron praises and commends Trump’s initiative, while Israeli leader Yair Lapid calls on the Nobel Committee to award Trump a peace prize. Leaders have lined up to claim credit for ending a genocide they spent two years, and the previous 77, funding, arming and enabling. But Gaza never needed saving. Gaza needed the world to stop killing it. Gaza needed the world to simply let its people live on their land, free of occupation, apartheid and genocide. Gaza’s people merely needed the objective, legal and moral standard generously afforded to those who murdered them.

The Israel-Gaza conflict is a long-standing and complex struggle rooted in deep political, historical, and religious issues. Gaza is a small, densely populated Palestinian territory located on the eastern Mediterranean coast, bordered by Israel and Egypt. Since 2007, it has been governed by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group that opposes Israel's existence. Israel was established in 1948, leading to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians — an event known as the Nakba . Gaza, a small coastal strip of land, became home to many of these refugees. Over time, tensions escalated due to wars, occupation, settlement expansion, and failed peace efforts. The conflict is marked by periodic escalations: rocket attacks by Palestinian militants, Israeli airstrikes, and ground operations. Civilians on both sides have suffered, with Gaza bearing heavy casualties due to its high population density and limited infrastructure. Efforts at peace, including international negotiations and ceasefires, have repeatedly failed due to deep political divisions, mutual distrust, and unresolved core issues like borders, refugees, security, and the status of Jerusalem.

The government shutdown is an extremely important topic because it's a worldwide issue. The shutdown began on October 1st 2025 and took a toll to the federal funding. House Republicans are pushing for a short-term funding bill with no added policy measure. This is mainly about whether the Senate Democrat wants any deal to include protections for health care and social spending before they agree to reopen the government. It also affects teenagers and education and even youth projects and healthcare. Hundreds of federal employees have been furloughed, while other people are working without pay. This includes roles such as airport staff, military personnel, and safety inspectors, and are impacted by the funding lapse. The shutdown has also paused many public services and delayed important economic data releases. Everything from national parks to small business loans processing is being disrupted as the standoff continues. The shutdown has been going for 10 days now but honestly this whole situation can take a big toll on our economy in the future.

The deal was Hamas would release the remaining hostages in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, while Israeli troops would partially withdraw. Israel wants Hamas to be demilitarized, but Hamas claims that disarmament is "tantamount to surrender and views armed struggle as a legitimate form of resistance against Israeli control over Palestinian lands."
