         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;Hunting and fishing were the basis for early trade with Europeans. Most European settlers, both rich and poor, came to the South. They were attracted by the favorable climate and natural resources. Enterprises for the production and processing of tobacco, rice, indigo, sugar cane, lumber and, of course, cotton began to develop. Small farms operated by individual farmers and their families flourished in the region, the driving force of the pre-war southern economy was large labor-intensive plantation agriculture. But people were needed to cultivate the land. This demand was satisfied by the slaves. The dependence of the South on plantation slavery has left an indelible mark on the political, social, cultural and psychological identity of the region.</div>]]></description>
