Macee North

Amy Doty

Engl 1010

14 July 2018

Literacy Narrative

Let me tell you my story about my experiences with reading and writing. My experience with both reading and writing are positive and negative. I will first start off with the positive of the two, then the negative.

First off I will tell you the positive experiences. Reading has always been a big passion of mine. I grew up being read to, I read in school all the time, and I read to others. Reading has always help me escape the world and all my troubles, when I read it takes me to a whole new world. I can remember when I was in elementary I love reading The Magic Treehouse books. These books had always taking me to new worlds I couldn’t imagine possible. However, the genre of book that helps me escape now from the world are mystery and thriller books. I love reading this genre, because I can always get myself lost in the book. Now let me tell you a positive experience when it comes to writing.

When it comes to writing I do enjoy it and I did have to write in school a lot. You could say that writing comes easy to me, depending on the topic that I am writing about. I remember a time when I was in high school that I was mad, and angry with the world and everybody around me, so I turn to writing and writing really helped me release all this anger. So now if there something on my mind and I don't want to tell people I write it, so that way I know my expression have been shared on paper. The best way for me to write is if I know a lot about a topic or it’s something I enjoy discussing. Now let me share the negative experiences on reading and writing.

The negatives that I have on reading is I’m not a strong reader. I can remember when I was younger with me not being a strong reader I was put into title, and speech classes to help. I was so afraid to read to others because I didn’t want to get made fun of. However, with the extra help I did become better at reading and was less afraid to read in front of others. Another thing I didn’t like about reading was that if a book was picked out for me I didn’t show interest in it, because the genre wouldn’t be right for me. Now let me tell my negative experience with writing.

Writing was something I struggled with as a kid, the reason being was I wasn’t a strong reader so that really mad a difference. Writing was something I had always disliked I never understood why I had to write summaries over stories, or why I had to write an essay over a boring topic. I had no interest in writing over theses topics. I was also scared of writing a paper over a topic I thought would be easy but then wasn’t, or I would write a paper and thought that it was amazing, but it really wasn’t. So, I didn’t ever like writing when I was young or even when I was in high school.

So, in conclusion as you can tell reading is something that I am passionate about. And every time I read I’m taken to a whole new world. However, it was hard for me when I was younger, and I didn’t enjoy as much. I love writing if I could I would do it all the time it just comes natural to me, especially if I’m free writing on whatever comes to my mind. Writing over certain subjects I don’t know a lot about or I don’t show interest then I’m going to struggle. When it comes to reading and writing it really depends on the topic whether I will like or not.

Macee North

Amy Doty

English 1010

6 August 2018

Writing Reflection

The assignment was we had to pick a social issue and write about it. The topic that I chose was Poverty in America I decide on this topic because poverty is something I know about and not a lot of people hear about on the news. Some of the topics that I rejected was gun control, immigration rights, the death penalty, etc. What I knew about poverty already was a fair amount, however, I did learn new things that I didn’t know before.

The process that I used to write my paper was I first came up with my three reasons I wanted to talk about. I figured out what I wanted to say about each one, and how I wanted them to flow together. And once that was done I came up with my thesis statement. The process that I used for this project I think was effective for me, because I made my three reasons first then built the thesis off of my three points. Some of the revisions that Sam had told me was that some of my reasons needed more information, that I should to talk about my personal experience, and my last sentence in my third body would work better in my conclusion. I used all the things he had told me. I chose to do this because I could see that one of my body paragraphs could use more information. I did move my last sentence to my conclusion because it did sound better as my lead out sentence. However, I didn’t know where to talk about my personal experience. I finally figured out where I needed to talk about my personal experience and that was in the first body paragraph.

I think the effective parts of my writing would be my solutions. I talked about how the government should use foreign aid to help. Once we see the government act then maybe other people would be willing to help; it could be another way around when the government sees us act then maybe they will join in. Another solution I had mentioned was we the people need to start helping. We could simply do this by giving away old clothes or giving a meal to someone who needs it.

The things that I think could be improved in my writing project are my sentence structure and word choice. I could improve my sentence structure by making sure I don’t have run-ons and use commons where they need to go. For my word choice, I could use bigger, and better words rather than my small words.

The purpose of my project was to persuade the reader to start helping people in poverty by doing one little action. I am mainly writing to the overall public. I chose the overall public because by writing to them I can get the word passed around about how we need to help people in poverty. And how we are all people and by doing one little action can help somebody in need. I believe my piece would be good for a blog site

My knowledge on what I knew before has grown because I have seen other people’s viewpoints on poverty.

For this assignment, I decided to use articles, and instead of making an outline I made a thought bubble and wrote everything down. I think the process that I used was effective because sometimes I think better when I see what I have written down. Not only that but I’ve used this method for a long time.

I think I could improve on my transitions and my overall sentence structure. With my transitions, I don't thank you flow together, or I'm being too straight forward. My sentence structure is ok at times, but I would like tips on how to improve it.

The purpose of this project was to tell other people what others thought of poverty. my overall audience was people in the community or anybody who wants to listen and make a difference. I think this paper would be good for a blog site.

I decide on my topic about poverty in America at the beginning when we started writing our position paper. Some topics that I rejected where, gun control, immigration, social media etc. My topic has evolved because I knew why people had an opposing viewpoint on poverty. And why they thought what they thought.
I used a thought bubble; using thought bubbles help me better see my thoughts more clearly. For me, I have always found it easy to use this method.
I think my sentence structure could be improved some more. I do not think that I’m forming good sentences or that I have good sentence structure.
The purpose of this project was to argue peoples opposing viewpoint on poverty. My audience was the overall public. I chose the public because everybody should see both sides of an issue, not just one. I decide on poverty in America at the start of the quarter. I rejected topics such as gun control, teen pregnancy, free speech, immigration, etc. My topic has evolved because in writing the previous essays my mind is now even more open about poverty.
The process I used was my previous essay three as my guide to writing essay four. I think this was effective because I was able to see where my pieces of information could go and would make sense.
I think my sentence structure could be improved, just by knowing when I have a run on, or even when I should put a comma or a semi-colon. Although overall, I was happy with this paper.
My purpose was to show people that there are two sides if not more into an issue. My audience was the public, more people should know how others are affected and what they can do to help. I could see my writing in a newspaper or a journal article.
