These stressor subsequently may lead to closer proximity to environmental hazards as well as higher rates of health disparities, biological susceptibility, and social vulnerabilities (Grijalva 2020; Identifying and Prioritizing Environmentally Impacted and Vulnerable Communities 2019; Morello-Frosch et al. 2011).

Demographic and Social Indicators -

  • Over ___% ☨ of residents are under the age of 10 (Defining Environmental Justice Communities and Distributional Analysis for Socioeconomic Analysis, 2016)
  • Over ___%☨of residents are over the age of 64
  • One☨or more residents over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma (Environmental Justice Indexes in EJScreen, 2014)
  • Over ___%☨ of adult residents are unemployed 
  • One☨ or more residents lack English proficiency 
  • One☨ or more residents identify as Indigenous and/or a person of color 
  • Residents do not own their home (Morello-Frosch et al. 2001)
  • One☨ or more residents experience food insecurity
  • One☨or more residents are undocumented immigrants 
  • Resident does not possess a federally recognized address of residence


Environmental/Health Indicators -

  • One☨ or more residents have experienced and/or been diagnosed with a health disparity, including but not limited to, low birth weight, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma, physical disability, cognitive deficits, cancer, or chronic disease status (Morello-Frosch et al. 2011)
  • Residents do not have access to inadequate heating and/or cooling inside the home.
  • Residents do not have access to clean water inside the home
  • Residence is located in a highly trafficked area. This would be measured by the count of vehicles (AADT, avg. annual daily traffic) at major roads within 500 meters, divided by distance in meters (Overview of Environmental Indicators in EJScreen 2014)
  • Residence contains lead paint☨
  • Residence is located within 5km or less from a hazardous waste facility (Overview of Environmental Indicators in EJScreen 2014)
  • Residence is located near or on top of underground storage tanks (UST) and/or leaking underground storage tanks (LUST). This would be measured by the count of LUSTs (multiplied by a factor of 7.7) and the number of USTs within a 1,500-foot buffered block group (Overview of Environmental Indicators in EJScreen 2014)
