Self-assessment is so important for students because it gives them autonomy over their learning. It is also a way to ensure that student learning is sustainable. Students who can effectively assess their own learning will be able to explore their curiosities on their own. It will also allow them to maintain academic excellence, regardless of who their teacher is.

Building autonomy in the classroom will also result in independence and intuitiveness outside of the classroom. Students who are empowered to self-direct and self-assess their own learning are the ones who will have the necessary skills to accomplish their goals.

We spent a lot of time discussing the underlying processes teachers must plan for. Having models/exemplars was one approach we explored with this question. In order for students to have opportunities to self-assess, they be able to examine and compare their demonstration of learning to a models. Developing a model takes consideration of the learning goal and an understanding of what success will look like. This also offers the teachers an opportunity to plan scaffolds that help student meet the goals during the learning process. Doing so requires intention but will allow for students to identify and take appropriate action to move the learning forward during the learning process.

Introducing the compelling questions before each new unit is something I do, but I (and the kids) need to go back to these questions after the unit to see if we can actually answer the questions using the content we learned. This would act as a pre and post self-assessment if you will...

It's funny...I usually skip over the pre and only utilize post assessments, but this one time in this one instance, I skip over the latter.

Self-assessment is so important. Right now I am thinking about having students self-assess on a group project. They will still receive an individual grade on their portion of the project, but they will be assessing their group on how well they all worked together and collaborated.
