It is also a way to ensure that student learning is sustainable. Students who can effectively assess their own learning will be able to explore their curiosities on their own. It will also allow them to maintain academic excellence, regardless of who their teacher is. 

Building autonomy in the classroom will also result in independence and intuitiveness outside of the classroom. Having models/exemplars was one approach we explored with this question. In order for students to have opportunities to self-assess, they be able to examine and compare their demonstration of learning to a models. Developing a model takes consideration of the learning goal and an understanding of what success will look like. This also offers the teachers an opportunity to plan scaffolds that help student meet the goals during the learning process.
