What made the film a “good film” or a “bad film”? Discuss the film’s merits and demerits.

There are many things that I liked about the film which made me say it’s a good film. First, I liked how realistic the showcasing of people’s lives was. The lines, actions, and how the actors delivered it impressed me as they showed and highlighted poverty. The pacing of the scenarios was just right and it felt natural, it felt relatable.

The things I did not like were: First, I hope they showed more about the backstory of Mangifico’s brother (why he dropped out). Second, while I cried over Magnifico’s death, something felt unfulfilled. Probably because there was not much build-up. His death seemed to be the climax of the movie, however, the film failed to build up what they wanted for the climax. His death was so sudden. It would have been better if they showed more about Magnifico’s aspirations, more development of other characters, and more of his connection with his neighbors before his death rather than showing everything after his death.

What part of the movie was the most powerful and/or remarkable? Why?

Magnifico’s death.

Magnifico’s death struck me the most as it was very unexpected. The poor boy did not deserve his death. I wished to see him grow up, have his efforts paid off, and be happy. I still remember the sun and the sky he painted for the coffin so it would not be dull. Now, the warm sun of the village rests in a cold body.

"Lola, mamatay ka na ba? Wag ka munang mamatay, ah."

This line by Magnifico hit me. As a Lolo and Lola’s girl, as a girl brought up and taken care of by my grandparents, I feel the same. I want to be able to give them and let them experience all the best in this world while they’re still here. I always want to cherish and preserve the moments we are together. Going back to Magnifico, this line showed the innocence of children. His innocence on the far reality of death, and how he remains strong despite knowing that his Lola will die soon. It also showed how hard it is for the poor to live, it is also hard for them to die. A sudden death will cause financial disruption. Therefore, it is something that must be prepared for.

"Tay, galit po ba kayo sakin kasi bobo ako?"

This line made me break down into tears. It was a casual delivery, an innocent delivery, yet I broke down. Many children face this issue in which they do not feel the love/support from their parents. As children, we crave validation the most from our parents, however, most parents fail to recognize this. Most parents are so focused on providing for their children’s basic needs that they fail to give attention to the emotional needs of their children. As parents, it is their responsibility to support and foster a child into a positive individual.

Poverty: One of the main social issues that influenced the characters and the theme. The central theme of the movie is poverty. Poverty caused financial pressure, hindered their access to healthcare, and took a toll on their emotional health. Especially how it showed that despite the expenses for his Grandmother’s treatment, even death is expensive for them to afford.

It showed the fragility and uncertainty of life. We are never certain of what will happen later, tomorrow, and so on. Life is so fragile that it can be lost in seconds. Therefore, we must cherish and express our love to our loved ones while they still are here.

The importance of compassion empathy, and having a sense of community. In the movie, Magnifico expresses selflessness despite his burdens. In the end, his kindness gave hope to people and made a difference in their personalities.

✬✬✬✬/5

Magnifico is a film that will touch everyone's heart. It leaves you with morals, emphasizing innate kindness.

I'd like to commend the actors in their portrayal. They did well in portraying impoverished people.

As for the cinematography, I would not say that it is remarkable and commendable The quality of the video was unpleasant. However, oddly, it sits well with the main theme and the simplicity of life and their neighborhood.

The only reason I rated it 4 was the organization of the plot for a 2-hour film. They had 2 hours yet they pushed everything at the very last 30 minutes. For the first 1 hour and 30 minutes, although it was good, it lacked build-up for what was coming. However, I still cried and bawled my eyes out.

Overall, it was a good experience watching this film. Definitely recommended and on the rewatch list!
