There is an understanding that students are young and still learning. They themselves are still learning how to mature and are feeling different emotions. Teachers understand that it isn't just about the subject, it's about the students as well. Being there for them, whether to talk or to listen, helps to build relationships and create a safety net. It helps them to grow and ideally help get them through.
