This was my first experience serving as an usrah assistant, and I began the session with ta‘aruf before moving into our main topic. I felt it was important to create a comfortable and welcoming environment, so I took the time to get to know each usrah member individually. By understanding their backgrounds and personalities, it became easier to build trust and openness. This approach helped them feel more at ease and more receptive to the input and reminders that I shared throughout the session. Overall, starting with ta‘aruf allowed the discussion to flow more smoothly and strengthened the bond within the usrah group.

Acquisition of Hikmah (استحواذ الحكمة)

Acquisition can be understood as a long journey, similar to a flight that requires careful preparation before take-off, steady guidance during the journey, and a safe, meaningful destination. The foundation of this journey is niyyah, as taught by the Prophet in the hadith “إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى”—indeed, every action is judged by its intention, and every person will be rewarded according to what they intend. Without a sincere intention, even the most successful acquisition may lose its true value.

When acquisition is aligned with Islam, it follows divine guidance and lawful boundaries. Through Iman, decision-makers remain conscious that Allah is always watching, strengthening integrity and accountability. With Ihsan, excellence in conduct is upheld, ensuring fairness, compassion, and ethical treatment of all stakeholders. These three elements act as the navigation system that keeps the journey on the right path.

Furthermore, practicing ‘amal bil ‘ilm ensures that knowledge is not merely theoretical but translated into responsible action. Strategic decisions are made with wisdom, foresight, and justice, avoiding harm and maximizing benefit. Ultimately, an acquisition guided by sincere intention, faith, excellence, and knowledge becomes not only a tool for organizational growth, but also a means of worship that leads to sustainable success in this world and reward in the Hereafter.

Reasons and sources of hikmah from ibadah (منابع ومصادر للحكمة من خلال العبادة)

Wisdom (hikmah) in life and decision-making originates from sincere worship grounded in the Rukun Islam, which serves as the primary source of spiritual and moral development. The first cause of wisdom is Shahadah, which establishes clarity of belief and purpose. By affirming the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Rasulullah , a Muslim gains a clear worldview that guides intentions and actions toward truth and accountability.

The second source of wisdom is Salah (prayer), which nurtures discipline, mindfulness, and constant remembrance of Allah. Through consistent prayer, individuals develop self-control and moral awareness, enabling wiser judgments in both personal and professional matters. Zakah, as the third pillar, purifies wealth and the soul, fostering social responsibility, empathy, and justice—key elements in making balanced and ethical decisions.

Fasting in Ramadan serves as another profound source of wisdom by strengthening patience, sincerity, and self-restraint. It trains individuals to prioritize spiritual values over desires, cultivating emotional intelligence and resilience. Finally, Hajj symbolizes unity, humility, and submission, reminding believers that all human achievements are temporary and that true success lies in obedience to Allah.

In conclusion, the Rukun Islam are not merely acts of ritual worship, but essential causes and sources of hikmah. Through these acts of ibadah, Muslims develop integrity, wisdom, and ethical awareness, enabling them to act with ‘amal bil ‘ilm and uphold Islam, Iman, and Ihsan in all aspects of life.

Reflection and improvement

Reflecting upon the Rukun Islam and Rukun Iman has deepened my understanding that Islam is a comprehensive way of life which balances both external practices and internal convictions. The pillars of Islam guide a Muslim’s actions through structured acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, and charity, fostering discipline, responsibility, and obedience to Allah. Meanwhile, the pillars of Iman strengthen the foundation of faith by nurturing belief in Allah, His angels, revealed books, messengers, the Day of Judgment, and divine decree (qada’ and qadar), which together cultivate sincerity, patience, and reliance upon Allah in daily life.

In terms of improvement for my usrah programme, I intend to enhance my engagement by preparing prior to each session, contributing more thoughtfully to discussions, and reflecting on how the lessons can be applied in real-life situations. Additionally, I aim to improve consistency in attendance and encourage mutual support among members so that the usrah becomes a meaningful platform for spiritual development, moral improvement, and strengthening ukhuwah.
