Your sponsor does need to be a US citizen for this to work, so make sure they are.

If your petition is approved, and you have a Visa available in your catagory, you'll need something called a green card, making you a Perminent Resident of the US. The green card is a confirmation and sort of a permit that says you can Legally live in the US.

After all that, you'll need to take a medication examination, the government will check that you have the required vaccines, and if you complete everything, you can Legally move to the US.

This process is easier if you are married to a citizen of the US, because then instead of having to wait five years to get a citizenship, you only need to wait three years.
