La canción - Lele Pons - Celoso

6 words:

Celoso – jealous

Pa’- contraction of para -for

Reproches – reproach in context meaning reservation or judgment

Me celas – you watch me
Gozo – joy
Tragos - drinks

I think this is a great song to listen to for this stage in our learning. The vocabulary and phrases/sentence structures are in line with what we have learned thus far. I came across this song through a Genius video that highlighted the top ten Spanish ‘Verified’ episodes of artists talking about songs they’ve made. I discovered several new-to-me artists and songs while watching this. (https://genius.com/videos/Los-episodios-mas-vistos-en-espanol?utm_source=video_list) I like that Lele Pons’s song “Celoso” is about having a good time regardless of what other people think, and that one doesn’t need a romantic attachment to have a fulfilling life. I did notice in watching videos of Spanish songs, there’s a strong emphasis on hyper-sexuality for the women. This is also true for music videos for English songs, but I feel like I noticed it more in Spanish music videos. I think because I was relying more on visual cues rather than inherent knowledge of the lyrics, it was more noticeable. I really enjoy this part of the coursework and have been listening to Spanish music since the beginning of this academic year. I have discovered that I really like reggaeton/dembow music out of Puerto Rico and a few pop songs out of Venezuela. I will be adding a few more artists to my rotation, not only because it’s good for listening practice in learning a new language, but also because there is some fantastic music from all over the world.

Recientemente yo empezado pintar.

Cabrita – young goat – said as an insult or expletive
Cielo – heaven
Adora – love
Miedo - fear
No fue así – it was not so
Muerfa – gnaw
Maldito – damned
Cigarillo negro – black cigarette, though in the movie it looked like a standard cigarette, trailer subtitles specified as black tobacco cigarette

Calzones Rotos was set in Chile in the 1950’s and told the story of family secrets when some members came to have a visit with the dying matriarch of the family. The title is also a name of a pastry served in the film. A few of the songs from the soundtrack were in English, I believe it was chosen as records were still a new technology and there wasn’t a large selection. The music that was in Spanish was played and sung by the sisters in the movie. Most of the movie was filmed at the home of the dying mother and her daughters. Since the plot was focused on secrets and details of relationships, it was difficult to discern who each character was, and the minutia of the secrets they were keeping. It wasn’t until the visitors were saying goodbye that I was able to hear them call each other by relation. This dark comedy was filmed with fantastic cinematography, beautiful set, great costumes, and highlighted the close-knit relationships in this family. I would absolutely recommend this film for those that love good story telling in film.
