Definition:

Being convinced by faith and belief that prayers have the ability to heal illnesses and ailments, while disregarding western medicine developed by scientists. Behold the power of prayer!

Connection:

The power of faith healing typically relies on anecdotal evidence. Meaning the reason for belief is hearing others stories of success. This type of evidence has no bearing in a scientific setting. Religious people want to believe that faith healing is real, due the fact that their personality and identity is based on believing in the higher power. Confirmation bias is generally present in such a way that the strong beliefs of faith healing are prioritized over western medicine.

While it uses scientific-sounding language frequently, for example, "Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory system, the part of the brain connected to smell, including the nose and the brain" it does go on to further explain that not all the uses for essential oils are supported by scientific research. Due to the reputable source of this article and the mere fact that article written is reviewed by a woman with a PhD, demonstrates validity and allows the reader to use critical thinking when using aromatherapy as a supplementary solution and not an immediate cure to ones ailments.

Definition:

Paranormal investigators use a plethora of tools and electronic devices to collect evidence to support the belief of the paranormal existence. By deliberately creating mystery, these experiences must solved by a team of experts!

Connection:

Ghost hunters, also known as paranormal investigators conduct interviews and research allegedly haunted houses. With the use of audio recording devices, thermographic cameras and thermometers, these teams collect evidence to support the beliefs of ghosts and the paranormal. This may be the most controversial psuedoscience belief as there is no scientific method or study published regarding the existence of ghosts. Leaving skepticism on the table for scientists and academics to debunk the common belief. However, "Ghost Hunters" which premiered on A&E in 2004, appealed to the public's desire to prove the existence of the paranormal by deliberately creating mystery. They went on to air over 230 episodes in their career.

Red Flag: Mystical energy

Definition:

The belief that everything and every person is energy and vibrational frequency. That we as humans have the ability to connect to the universe or to an invisible source for clarity.

Connection:

Tarot reading can persuade one to believe that mystical energy is in direct correlation with cards pulled during a spread. Some cards can be simple YES/NO cards, while others can tap into emotional burdens the person is facing. Wands symbolize a call to action, Cups appeal to emotions, Swords correspond with challenges, and Pentacles with finances. During a spread, where you ask a question and pull your cards, its easy to believe that the mystical energy of tarot has the answers to your problems. But do they actually? If you're concerned about finances and pull the swords card, do you believe that the tarot confirms your struggle? Does pulling a pentacles card during that question give you the hope that its only temporary and money is coming your way? Either way, the cards leave circumstances open to interpretation of the user, and credit the mystical energy for the answers.

Definition:

Confirmation bias is when we look for evidence that support our pre-existing beliefs and disregard the facts that don't.

Connection:

Let's talk politics and where you go to read the news! One's views and which end they're on with regards to the political spectrum influence their choice on where they go to get the latest news. Confirmation bias isn't always intentional, but this is a pretty good example of how we validate our existing beliefs and ignore information that doesn't align. No matter how strong your opinions or beliefs are, you're likely to find a source that agrees with you. It would be wise to step back, use your critical thinking skills and open your mind to different opinions.

When looking for holistic remedies, all natural sources are considered before scientifically researched products.

Connection:

The history of Lion's Mane (mushroom) has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for over 2000 years. Claims have been made that Lion's Mane has the ability to cure cancer and treat diseases such as Parkinsons and Alzheimers. This appeals to peoples emotions when they're in times of despair. Although the results cannot be recorded scientifically, the practice earns validity.

Connection:

Reiki was created in 1914 by Mataji Kawakami in Japan. It is believed that this healing modality can cure ailments in the body and promote relaxation by cleansing the 7 chakras found within the human body by energy movement. This modality is typically performed by a Reiki Practioner, who has had 3 attunements in order to become a master healer. They claim that a global spiritual awareness is causing more people to see the signs that the universe is sending. These signs come to fruition in numbers and/or patterns and that our subsconcious mind is responsible for the fundamental changes for our awakening. Another theory claims that seeing repetitive numbers is a code that we live in a simulation. Finally, other theories lead to thought that angels and spirit guides try to send us signs to help us along our paths, but understanding the meaning of the underlying message may be difficult.

The term was coined by a man named Colin Andrews in the 80's. This phenomenon is attributed to the belief of UFO's due to the fact that there are little to no signs of human handiwork. Crop circles are typically circular in shape, rarely triangular, or rectangular and appear overnight and noticed in the morning by farmers and passerbyers. The reason for these circles and designs are unexplained.

For example, poltical or social ideology, feminism, capitalism etc. These beliefs form the operating principles to run a society.

Connection:

Prior to the 18th Century, the most dominant ideology was based around dynastic (monarchy) principles. Supreme authority is granted to an individual in power and society conforms to rules set out therein. Most authorites who functioned as head of state were male and passed down to the first male in succession. This succession is hereditary. Still seen in England today with King Charles, Prince William, Prince George, etc.
