In this week, our given stimulus was a storyboard depicting a woman in her car as a red truck follows her, and the woman appearing upset as she looks into her car mirror. In our group, we decided to respond to this stimulus by writing a song about an emotional breakup of a relationship, involving the lyrics ‘car crash’ in order to suit the storyboard and our take on it. For the style of genre, we wanted to structure a pop song based on the work of artists such as Katy Perry and Taylor Swift as our inspiration.

The performance

The performance’s structure: Firstly, the guitar opens playing the chords and then both of the vocalists come in to sing the verse. In the last bar of the verse, the guitar plays faster in order to build up into the chorus. The bass guitar also comes in just before and into the chorus to help the build up. This then leads back into the second verse after eight bars of the guitar and bass together followed by the lyrics afterwards, where the guitar and vocals soften again into another build up and chorus. Then, the guitar plays quieter chords alongside the vocalists singing a change of lyrics which simplify this part of the song, establishing more of a structure as a bridge. We then repeat the chorus with the guitar using a crescendo into them, and then end on the final chorus where the lyrics are changed slightly to signify the end of the song.

Before we performed, we described our song as a ‘pop ballad’ that was emotional as well as lyrically driven. I believe we successfully captured this in our performance through the lyrics. Our peers commented on the lyrics, saying that they fitted the stimulus as well as the bass which supported and drove the song. So overall, I would say that our strengths were the lyrics and the levels at which all the instruments worked together and how they interacted.

The development

In our song there was use of an acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and two vocalists. At first, the guitar and bass let the notes ring, but this later developed to them both playing a lot of staccato for the performance too. Another development we used was the dynamics of the song, by playing the guitar, bass and vocals at a quieter level during the verses and having a crescendo into the chorus in order to tell the difference between parts of the song’s structure.

We were given nothing to improve on, although I think we could have developed the piece further by having some sort of beat by a percussion instrument playing or even using a keyboard to play some chords. I believe this would add more texture but would still keep the song simple and effective.

For my own strengths and weaknesses, I think I succeeded in my role of lifting and driving the song forward by playing the bass. However I would have liked to use more of a range of techniques rather than just staccato.

Overall, I would say that we created a song that suited our take on the stimulus very well, and that the simplicity of it all worked in our favour. I don't believe it needed much more development as it was already successful in what we wanted to portray.
