It has been five days since you've been drafted (Selective Service Act). Four days since I saw you last. The old rule is, "If we must write, write only of happy things." I am sad to say there is little happiness in my life left on the home front.

Your father wishes for me to tell you that he has purchased a war bond to try and help you. He says that he wants to be supportive. Your mother also sends her love and best wishes as well. She says she wants you stay safe.

I should tell you that I got a job, too. I am working as secretary at a factory. The factory is helping the War Industries Board. See, I am trying my best to help you in any way possible. the other girl that works with me at reception, Cora, she said she just moved here from Louisiana (Great Migration). She told me all about her mother who was a slave on a plantation as a young girl. Well, back before slavery was abolished. She moved to Albany earlier this summer. I like her though, she seems nice enough.

I just miss you so much already. This war has already been going on for almost three years. I fear that it will go on for so much longer.

Oh, how I miss you so much, my darling. I know this separation is hard but, please, remember the cause. I am proud to be serving for my country. As for "write about something happy" rule, please do not abide by it. I want to know all that goes on at home. The good and the bad.

I am happy to hear from my family. Please send them my love. I am thrilled Father bought a war bond as that will help our cause.

As for you, my darling, I am glad that you have joined in the cause as well. I hope you like your job, too. Cora sounds nice. Or "nice enough" as you say. Oh Catherine, I miss your wit and humor.

After I was drafted, I saw an officer arresting a man. When I asked the man next to me what was going on, he said that man resisted induction. He had a wife and three kids. (Schenck vs. United States)

I should tell you however that the posters you see on every street corner is very biased. I would consider them propaganda. It is very different than what they make it out to be. Just have caution, my darling.

I am happy my letters have reached you easily. I hope you are alright. I wonder about what you are doing. If you have even left the country or if you are still in basic training.

My job at the factory is surprisingly easy. I am able to talk to Cora and she is very nice. I like her a lot. I now think she is more than "nice enough." We are starting to become friends.

My parents think this is turning into a total war. Your parents think so, too. I am starting to worry more. Well, I have always worried since the tensions began.

I just hope you are safe. I miss you so much.

Your letters warm my heart. My love grows for you each and every day. I am so excited to see you again. 

There are rumors that there are spies among us. Spies from the other side that are trying to, well, spy. Our commanding officers have had many talks with us. Apparently, Congress just passed a new act. There are now a lot of punishments, even death. I am leery of some of my comrades. I am worried.

I will be going into the trenches soon. I shall think of you everyday but please do not write letters because I can not get them. Just know how much I miss you and love you.
