Nathaniel Hawthorne was a writer in the 19th century. Hawthorne added a "w" to his last name in order to disconnect himself from his family. He was born in Salem, but grew up in Maine. Hawthorne did not care for Salem, he even wrote a book, "The Salem World of Nathaniel Hawthorne" describing Salem as a dark and gloomy town.

Durning the 17th century the Puritan religion was common and all the participating people were expected to act a certain way- following the word of God everyday. Adultery was a sin in those days and to be viewed as a sinner was even worse, the sinner would become an outcast. Hester committed the sin of adultery and faced exactly that.
