Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost have their own unique styles of poetry; however, each of their writings can connect to each other. What makes Emily Dickinson unique is the way she uses punctuation. Dickinson uses numerous amount of dashes in her poetry. The dashes show breaks in between the lines of her writings. The dashes could also represent open-ended endings, endings that are up to the reader's interpretation. She also uses many Biblical references that can relate to the subject of the poem. Imagery is a type of figurative language that Dickinson incorporates into her poem. Imagery enhances her poetry by creating a picture in the reader's head that either darkens or brightens the tone of the poem. In Robert Frost's poems, a major theme he focuses on, similar to Dickinson, is death. Frost uses symbolism to show death in his poems. In his poem, "Nothing Gold Can Stay," Frost alludes to death by using plants, another theme in his writings. Frost and Dickinson also use irony. In Frost's "A Late Walk," the speaker walks to the garden expecting a normal-looking garden; however, when he arrives, the garden is all wilted and dead. Dickinson uses irony effectively in "I heard a Fly buzz." When the speaker dies, they expect the King or God, but get a fly instead. Though Dickinson and Frost have their own unique voice and form, they relate to each other in more ways than not.
