문장 끝에 'by+명사(행위자)'를 붙일 수도 있음

목적어가 2개인 4형식 문장의 경우 목적어 각각을 주어로 하는 2개의 수동태 문장을 만들 수 있음

단, 2번째 목적어인 직접목적어를 주어로 할 경우 간접목적어 앞에 to나 for의 전치사가 들어감

make, cook, write의 경우 직접목적어를 주어로 하는 수동태만 가능

형태: 전체 문장은 5형식이다. ‘···하기를’에 해당하는 목적격 보어로 to부정사가 온다.

「동사+목적어+목적격 보어」의 형식으로 쓰이는 다른 동사로는 tell, ask, expect, allow 등이 있다.

관계대명사절을 이끄는 who, which, that등을 관계대명사라고 하고, 관계대명사절에서 주어 역할을 할 경우 주격 관계대명사라고 한다.

선행사에 따라 관계대명사의 사용이 정해지는데, 선행사가 사람이면 who, 사물이거나 동물이면 which를 쓰며 사람, 사물 구별 없이 쓸 수 있는 것은 that이다. 관계대명사절은 선행사 뒤에 위치한다.

관계대명사절에서 관계대명사가 주어로 쓰였으면 주격 관계대명사, 목적어로 쓰였으면 목적격 관계대명사라고 한다. 목적격 관계대명사는 생략할 수 있다.

(경찰은 그 사람들을 찾고 있다. 그 사람들은 사고를 목격했다.)

→ The police are looking for the people who saw the accident.

(경찰은 사고를 목격한 사람들을 찾고 있다.)

This is the girl who rescued the cat.

(선행사 the girl이 사람이므로 관계대명사 who를 썼다.)

I bought the book (which) I wanted to read.

(which는 the book 대신 쓰였고, I wanted to read the book에서 read의 목적어이므로 목적격 관계대명사이며, 생략할 수 있다.)

접속사 unless는 ‘~하지 않는다면’의 의미로 if ~ not과 같은 뜻이다.

 때를 나타내는 접속사(when, while, before, after, until, as soon as 등)와 조건을 나타내는 접속사(if, unless)가 사용된 부사절에서는 미래의 일도 현재시제로 표현해야 한다.

We will be late unless we take the subway.

I will not go camping unless you go with me.

If the weather will be fine tomorrow, we will play soccer. (x)

→ If the weather is fine tomorrow, we will play soccer.

→ She was given some flowers by Peter.

I want you to be happy. (5형식 / 목적어인 you가 행복해지기를 원한다.)

He told me to sit down.

The doctor advised him to stop smoking.

= The students' questions are always answered by the teacher.

At dinner, Harry ate six shrimp.

= At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by Harry.

The mother kangaroo carries the baby kangaroo in her pouch.

= The baby kangaroo is carried by the mother kangaroo in her pouch.

Grandma told us good stories.

= Good stories were told to us by Grandma.

He didn't allow us to speak English in class.

I advised him to accept the offer.

Dad told us to get into the car.

= 옆집에 사는 사람들은 매우 친근하다.
