The only verse in the Qu'ran which is specific about Muslims marrying those of other religions does not make a distinction between men and women. It states only that women and men should marry only other "believers" or those that are not "idolaters." This means that if a Muslim is to marry a non-muslim, they should be a monotheist, like a Christian or Jewish person. In recent times, many Muslim scholars state that while a Muslim man can marry outside of religion, this is strictly forbidden for Muslim women. Where is the equality in that? 
I say that we need to adjust our traditional Muslim values to reflect the realities of modern life. Women are not prohibited by the Qu'ran from marrying other "believers" so why are they prohibited from doing this by their communities? Muslims are now even commonly marrying Hindu women, which would have previously been prohibited because they are polytheistic, or "idolaters." New laws preventing conversion through marriage in India have caused ripples throughout the country.  A number of states have enacted laws that prevent religious conversion, and these laws have the goal of challenging "Love Jihad," a conspiracy theory spreading throughout Hindu nationalist circles and right-wing media. 
Many critics of these laws say that they are just another way to subjugate the already vulnerable and disenfranchised Muslim population in India. Despite legal restrictions to this persecution, Hindu Nationalist vigilante groups often finish the job that the government starts, sometimes attacking couples listed by the government as attempting to convert. 
While the BJP conjures up images of predatory Muslim men seducing vulnerable Hindu women, the true nature of the majority of these marriages is consensual.
