The Young Turks wanted to expand and create a new Turkish Empire with one language and one religion. However, Armenia was blocking their plan to expand eastward. Furthermore, the Turkish people despised the Armenian because they were more educated and successful than the Turks. The Turks were suspicious of the Armenians because they thought that the Armenians were not loyal to the Ottoman Empire. They believed that the Armenians would be more loyal to Christian governments like the Russians had. As the Ottoman Empire declined, these suspicions increased and Sultan Abdul Hamid II wanted to put an end to Armenia's campaign for more rights. With the start of World War I, Hamid saw an opportunity to eradicate the Armenian population.

Classification is how cultures have categories to distinguish people into "us and them" by ethnicity, race, religion, or nationality. The Armenians were classified by their religion. The Armenians were relegated to second-class citizenship and had official discrimination due to them being a Christian minority. The majority religion was Muslim, the Muslims viewed them as "infidels" and unequals. In addition, the Turks used the Armenians as a scapegoat for siding with the Russians which spurred up hatred for the Armenians.

Dehumanization is when one group treats another group as second-class citizens. When a group of people is thought of as “less than human” it is easier for the group in control to murder them. This is what the Turks did to the Armenians. The women, children, and the few surviving men had to march to a non-existent place in the Syrian desert. These massive caravans were denied food and water, hundreds of thousands of people died during this deportation. These people were stricken from their human right to eat and drink which is horrifically dehumanizing.

Polarization is when extremists drive the groups apart. Hate groups broadcast propaganda that reinforces prejudice and hate. Also there may be Laws that forbid intermarriage or social interaction between the groups. In Armenia, the Young Turks began a campaign to portray the Armenians as a kind of fifth column and a threat to the state. The Young Turks use propaganda and fear of external conquest to create a widespread support for an entirely ethnic Turkish state instead of having a multinational state. Also, Turkish officials claimed the Armenians were going to revolt and destroy the Ottoman Empire. In addition, anyone who was christian had to pay more taxes and they had a lack of legal and political rights. They had no government representation.

When extermination begins, and quickly starts the mass killing. It is referred as "extermination" to the killers because they do not believe their victims are fully human. If it is sponsored by the government, the armed forces often work with private armies to do the killing. On April 24, 1915 over two hundred Armenians were rounded up in Constantinople, signaling the start of the Armenian Genocide. Then began the arrests, deportation, and executions. People were massacred by being hung and swords. Under the commission by the government, they sent bands of Turks to raid and attack Armenians on their caravans. Between 1894 and 1896 over 100,000 Armenian villages were massacred during widespread pogroms conducted by the Sultan's special regiments.

Genocide is always organized, usually by the state, though sometimes informally or by terrorist groups. Militias are often trained and armed. Plans are made for genocidal killings. The Turkish government claimed the Armenians were planning to revolt and destroy the Ottoman Empire. That led to the support of the Young Turks(Turkish nationalists) and the deportation of the Armenians. Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid II said in 1890, “I will soon settle those Armenians. I will give them a box on the ear which will make them…relinquish their revolutionary ambitions.” Then the Turkish government and the Young Turks informed the Armenians 3 days to pack their belongings and leave.

They often blame what happened on the victims or explain it away as a consequence of war. Today, the Turkish government dismisses all charges of genocide and denies the deportation of the Armenians was actually a plan to exterminate the whole Armenian population.

Wegner showing conditions in the Armenian deportations camps. Both men documented these events in secret and if they were ever caught would be sentenced to death as would anyone that tried to protect the Armenians. These photos are the main reason that people are now beginning to remember the forgotten genocide that was the Armenian Genocide.

The main reason for their passive take on the Armenian genocide was due to trying the United states out of WWI. He feared that if they messed with foreign affairs it could get them targeted. Most American citizens agreed with this choice.
Even Hitler, who conducted the most famous genocide believed that no one would remember his based off the reaction of the Armenian genocide.
