Only free men can negotiate. A prisoner cannot enter into contracts.”

When he got out of prison on February 11, 1990 he only strengthened his battle against apartheid. “To relax efforts now would be a mistake which generations to come will not be able to forgive.”

Won 1993 Nobel Peace Prize

Received over 250 awards (most in the world)

In 2009, the United Nations declared that on July 18 (Nelson’s birthday) annually there will be Nelson Mandela International Day to honour Mandela’s legacy and promote community service.

Died in 2013 at the age of 95

First black president of South Africa (1994-1999)

Born July 18, 1918

Born in Transkei, Africa

Birth name means “to pull a branch off a tree” and “troublemaker”

Whilst he was in prison he was told that if he stopped his acts of violence he would be allowed to go free, but he did not agree to this provision.

Nelson Mandela was in prison for 27 years.

Passed away due to AIDS.

Received Nobel Peace Prize for getting rid of the apartheid system.

He has honorary degrees from over 50 universities worldwide.

He was Christian.

His hobby was boxing.
