Farmers learned how to make irrigation canals so there was fresh water for crops. There were a lot of crocodiles, not much food and critters were hard to catch for food.

There was fertile soil due to the Indus River, and irrigation for the crops. There were seasonal winds and monsoons, which were a relief from hot and dry conditions. There was Summer wet- moist air from the Arabian Sea/Indian Ocean moves in over the hot dry land. Monsoons caused destructive flooding, which destroyed crops, or monsoons would come late and the crops died. Stagnant water can lead to disease- from bacteria or mosquitos- malaria.

There were islands, which the Greek people settled on. Each city state was cut off from the rest by mountains or water. They were sailors (they adapted to the island environment). They had temperate climates that allowed them to be outside. There were loads of bays which were good for ships. They trade marble, wine and olive oil. They had democracies. There was a lack of fertile land. Greeks set up colonies on islands because they didn’t have enough fertile land.

Cyclones tend to destroy their crops, making many farmers poor, even though the country is the largest producer of vanilla bean. Since a lot of Madagascar is forest, people are forced to get rid of trees to get fertile land, and to get resources as the population grows at a high rate. This is leading to soil erosion, and loss of a lot of unique wildlife. These unique animals and plants exist due to the isolation from the mainland (the country is an island), and the animals are hunted down to near extinction. Hydroelectric power is also important in this country, as there are many water sources, such as rivers (farmers get fish from here). There are highlands (due to the mountains) where potatoes and yams grow.

The geography is more of a challenge as there are not enough resources for the people to survive. Population is growing, needing to chop down wildlife, to provide more food. Wildlife disappearing means that at some point, all the resources will be gone. If there is no surplus of food, it’s hard for a country to grow economically and technologically, as everyone has to be dedicated to getting food. This made it easy for other countries to come to take control.
