"When you believe" - Whitney Houston

The first event I remember in my life was in 2005. It was when my younger brother got staph. He was under a year old, and was set to be hospitalized for a drain. However, the morning he was supposed to be hospitalized the orange-sized infection on his abdomen was gone. It had disappeared overnight. The doctor said there was no way to describe this event except for that it was a MIRACLE. Whenever I hear the song, "When you believe" I immediately think of my brother's miracle.

This song is important to me because it reminds me of the fun times I had at camp. In 2015 I went to camp for 5 weeks in North Carolina. I learned many different songs, but this song was one of my favorites. My cabin made an entire music video to this song, and I still continue to fondly look at back on the memories of filming that video. I particular like this song because of the message of rebirth and renewal it highlights. Because of the memories, message, and tune this song never fails to make me feel happy.

When I was in 6th grade I began learning German. I had wanted to learn German ever since I was a preschool and read a book about the Amish. My German 1 instructor, Frau Gleason, was exceptionally encouraging and masterfully taught me the German language. Her classes were both informative and fun. At the beginning of the class, we listened to a song. In the first semester we learned a song called "Das Privileg zu sein". As a beginner in German I naturally did not understand much of the song, but as the year went on I began to understand more and more. This song is special to me because it was the first song I fully learned and understood in German, as well as one of my favorite German songs I have learned so far. Additionally, I particular like the meaning of the song and the emphasis it puts on the importance of every hour and day we live.

"Count on me" is one of my best friends and mine's favorite songs. Honestly, neither one of us LOVES the tune, but whenever we are feeling down we always play this song to make each other smile. My best friend, Ana Barbara, lives in Ecuador and we have only met 3 times in our entire lives. Having a best friend in another country has its challenges, but it also has its perks. It has shown me the diversity of the world and the difference between the United States and other countries. Moreover, I have learned how to utilize FaceTime to the extreme, and that a best friend doesn't have to be someone who is super similar to you, on your sports team, or in your classes. Even if we are not physical together often, it is always nice to know I have someone I know I can count on.

"Rude" - MAGIC!

Swimming is definitely a huge part of my life. Over 12 hours a week and 6 days a week, I spend hours upon hours with the people on my team and in the water. Every spring we go on a team trip to Palm Springs where we spend lots of time bonding and making memories. On the trip in May 2017, one girl on our team had a favorite song, "Rude". She often would sing it to us over and over again, making the rest of us on the team want to cry. After several hours on the bus, one girl named Lilian had finally had enough and she began to imitate the other girl and sing it worse than she did. Eventually, everyone on our team was screaming the song in the most horrible way they could. Although some of us went deaf for a few hours afterwards, the song has become a team tradition and we always play it during meet warm ups or drylands. Even though the actual singing of the song makes me cringe, whenever I hear the song I never fail to smile.

Up until I was four years old, I went across the street to my widowed neighbors house each night. She always gave me a cookie, and with her old age and dementia she viewed me as her daughter, who had tragically died of cancer. In 2008 when I was five years old, Auntie Lois became sick with cancer and as a young girl I watched her die. I remember visiting her up until the night she died, and later attending her funeral. Auntie Lois was the first person I knew who died, and had a immense impact on my life. This song is significant to me because it was the song that Auntie Lois always played when I was at her house, and it always reminds me of her.

In 2016, my family and I drove to Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho with our 5 month year old Springer-spaniel puppies. The trip was a tremendous amount of fun, and we drove through many states and saw many different landscapes. As we drove, we listened to one specific XM radio station. Channel 16, The Blend, was for some unknown reason the only channel we listened to that entire trip. One specific song, Piece by Piece, was played at least 3 times every hour. My family and I placed bets on how many times the song would be played in the 16 hours we were driving. Although my family and I know hate the song, it always brings back amusing and cheery memories from our trip.
