Understanding and implementing the 4 C's is more important that the DOK as they are more what rule the world as the students move towards adulthood. Everything they do in the work force, personal time, or even their family life is based off of appropriate communication, working together (collaboration), thinking critically about issues/problems, and coming up with a solution that is based on their particular likes and needs. This is what being a grown-up is all about, and it is established and practiced within the school education system (or should be) so that all can do it as they age. 😊

I believe the 4C's are more important than DOK. I do think DOK has its time and place. In the section on 4C's, the suggestion is given to let students Google answers on tests. While this is great because students can do this in life, students will not be able to do this on standardized tests. Therefore the first level of DOK definitely has an important place. But, ultimately I believe the 4C's are more important because they are what will have the most long lasting impact on students. Collaboration and Problem Solving (not one of the 4C's but can fall into the categories) are huge for students. It is something that employers will be looking for in potential employees. If our ultimate goal is to teach students the skills to be successful in life and to help better the future for everyone, being able to regurgitate information that can easily be found using Google is not what we need to focus on teaching our students.

The 4C's are critical in preparing our students for the future, and with problem solving being the most important skill that businesses need to see, this is where DOK comes in. My upper elementary classroom is routinely in DOK 3 & 4, and this is where their productive collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity come out. It allows for the deeper dives and the transfer of learning that are imperative in solving problems. Therefore, I don't think you can have one without the other.

I see many aspects of both represented so I feel they are equally as important. Collaboration, ability to think for themselves and the transfer of knowledge which shows up in their creativity when they show their learning area all vitally important! Whenever they have the freedom or ability of choice, to learn from one another and show it in their answers, that is where the learning begins.

I believe that DOK and the 4 Cs are equally important in education and a teacher's approach to student success. Since "students can see their own learning progress by applying the DOK process," it is vital to our students' understanding and overall success (p. 62). Additionally, preparing students to think critically and communicate effectively is equally important in order for our students to thrive. These skills will help our students in life tremendously. This is why I cannot choose between the two, as I find them both to be extremely vital.

The 4Cs and DOK are both very important in the classroom. As a special education teacher, my students struggle with the higher order questioning and critical thinking the most. Taking the focus away from either one of these things does a disservice to my students. I believe a good educator would be incorporating both into their daily planning and instruction.

The 4 Cs is something that students will certainly use for their entire life, and it is something that teachers can weave into their lessons to help students learn how to do effectively. I love the chart on page 28 that shows what skills the business community finds important. I tell my students often that they must learn to communicate and collaborate with each other (even when they don't want to) because that is a real life skill! DOK is also important to understand so that teachers are making sure that their lessons have some depth and challenge and not just all level one.

-Callie McChesney

If you really take a look, they essentially intertwine together as one supports the other. Utilizing them together helps us be able to connect with our students on a more individual level. Just like we have tests that help us know how we learn, or what type of leader we are, the DoK and 4C's give us the ability to truly understand where our students excel and areas they need our support.

One thing they keep saying over and over is that the ability to collaborate and effectively communicate are some of the major issues in the newest members of our workforce. This is a hinderance as many companies want to hire employees that can think on their own and communicate their ideas effectively.

Hanna Carter - I think having a clear understanding of DOKs is more important for teachers because it allows teachers to zone in on the exact kind of learning and project development they are expecting. Like in the chapter, often times teachers believe they are questioning at a deep level, only to find out that they are really only operating at a Level 2. I believe there is a time and a place for each level of DOK to exist, but we should be encouraging our students to push beyond Level 1 at a more consistent level. Yes, students may be able to correctly fill in a worksheet - but how deep is that learning going and how long will the learning last? If students are collaborating, that will ensure a deeper level of understanding, and if they are having to apply the knowledge to the outside world, that creates an even longer time of remembering the content.
